Long story short

Family members car parked on road outside house. 10pm drunk driver smashed into it and ran off. CCTV captured it all. Police involved so insurance details got. Rear passenger side wheel is pushed forward and whole car was shunted about 6 ft.

Insurers have not examined car but have gone on pics and cctv sent to them and have written it off. They have offered an amount at least 2k below what a replacement can be got for.

Family member disputed this, insurance upped offer by 250 quid and have said tough, we are sending a cheque.

Relative has said that is still not acceptable, but now ins have said tough again.

Any advice as relative is genuinely not taking the piss on the replacement cost of the car.

Just keep pushing. And pushing. And send adverts. And then make a complaint. It's a ball ache but should increase the offer. Ultimately you can take it to the ombudsman.

Thanks Bill. Relative is starting the complaints procedure today as the ins co has told the hire car company to take the car back. Even though it has not been settled

Collect adverts for similar cars as a starting point. Insurance company cannot simply say tough and send a cheque. Your relative has to agree to the car being written off and to the acceptable value for this. The PH collective could potentially help. What is the car, age, condition and mileage? What has been offered?

I can’t add much, but any evidence of good prior condition could be useful.

Many years ago now, but I had a car stolen and ransacked basically.
The claims assessor’s report said that the interior was ‘untidy’.

Hi, I'm AceT's relative.
Thanks for all the replies.

So the car I have is a 2015 Ford Focus Zetec 100 with 39k miles on the clock. Good condition very minimal wear and tear regular servicing and no issues with MoT etc...

Searches sent show vehicles of a similar age/mileage type are anything from 9.5k to 13k and that is not what is being offered.

Insurer says they've done everything in line with guidelines and it's being escalated etc... I can now arrange for a third party private garage to take a look and get a quote but have very few days to arrange this.
