I realised I've been paying tax I haven't owned since August last year.
Long story short:

Car was written off but the insurance process took a long time so I never declared the car off the road and ended up forgetting about it.
I've just noticed I am still paying tax on it because I am an idiot.

The car was written off, I am no longer the owner.

I thought maybe I'd just make it SORN, but cannot find the log book anywhere - it was probably binned along with most of the car's history.

What should I do?

You don't need the logbook to "get rid" of the car

Just write to the DVLA:

I was the registered keeper of vehicle registraion XXXX (make model year), from xx date to xx date, when it was written off by my insruance company.

I no longer have the vehicle as of xx date - please update your records.

Thanks

Include your address where the car lhave been registered.

They should put it through as you no longer owning it, whether they put it as scrapped or not I don't know (there doesn't seem to be much consistency here...) , but in any case it'll stop you getting charged for tax. If you include the dates in the past, there is a (miniscule) chance you might even get a refund for the erroneous tax paid, but I wouldn't count on it.

i've just done something similar... sold a car to a scrappy back in 2018, but then every year got a recall note from BMW as the DVLA still had me on record as the owner.

just wrote them a letter saying the car was scrapped 4 years ago, and that i couldnt remember who the scrappy was, or the exact date of the scrap - but just made it clear i was no longer the owner. they have now updated their records.

doubt you'll get your overpaid tax back (maybe you will, who knows) but you wont get chased for more tax.
