Repatriation of car... does it need insurance and tax?

After a breakdown in France, and the car initially being written off due to being beyond economic repair...the AA have agreed to return it home. Current wait time is between 6-9 weeks!

I want to insure another car to use here so would like to shift the insurance over. Can they still return the car without Valid insurance in place and sorned? Any issues at the port? It will be coming back on a low loader recovery type thing and delivered to my front door. Plan is to sell this car on its return so no need for insurance anyway going forward.

I have asked the AA (euro breakdown arm) but they didn't seem to know or understand my question.
