Discussing with a mate today what is the last actual newly developed 100% internal combustion engine. We could quite work out if it's already been done or will be one coming out.

What was the last truly brand new (not an evolution) ICE?

Edit - to add I meant in a road car and by new I mean one which is designed from the ground up rather than an evolution of an existing unit.

I don't think it's possible to really come up with a single concrete definition of what a "brand new" engine means. Every engine has, by the nature of how engineering works, built on those which came before it. New internal combustion engines are certainly being developed now, even if not for cars, for other things.

It hasnt been done yet and wont be for a long time.

You forget about all the countries without electrical grids just for car engines, then add in all the trucks, boats, planes, heli's, jet washes, motorbikes, lawnmowers, generators etc where big heavy batteries arent viable.

Would it be something like the Valkyrie or T.50?
