Just borrowed one for the weekend, I normally drive petrol and am very impressed. Just nice relaxed easy driving, with economy back to the old days at 12p per mile (400 miles clocked) and still got half a tank left!

Probably close to an 800 mile range, eat that EVers. And no it’s not about bladder capacity, no I don’t want a meal at Moto for hours while I have to wait for a free working charger, it’s about being able to drive miles away and back without having to refuel at all, just so much more convenient.

Seriously considering buying a diesel as a next car…. laugh

Might as well, as long as not caught up in any Ulez zones etc
Plus the fuel price is pretty much on parity to petrol now..

My 2014 Skoda averages over 60mpg, drives well, £30 a year car tax.
800 odd mpg range often seen. Well over a month beteen fills.

I should change it for a petrol/hybrid/electric… been putting it off for a few years. A few more years hopefully.

Will buy an EV when they are cheaper & better than they are now. Or the current 10 year old cars go pop. EV in the early beta tester phase it seems. Rapid improvements & getting more affordable.

It certainly can be, with a decent diesel car.

I have never owned a diesel.

I think they are a little council, to be honest.

Council? Heard it all now. If you've never owned one, it's not a very informed comment, is it?

I've never driven a diesel that is fun. Impressive torque and fuel economy makes an easy drive.

I do think diesel cars are getting pushed out with all the LEZ. How long before Euro 6 diesel cars also fall foul?

They are only worth buying if you're doing a large annual mileage.

Or you don’t want to spend 20 to 40 grand on a new car, would be cheaper to pay the Ulz and congestion fines for the few times I need to go into the zones

My 2017 1.3 CDTi Vauxhall Combo van is massive fun to drive. For a little engine it performs admirably. Great fun on the back roads, a mile muncher on motorways and A-roads, and always bags of torque in the mid range to get out of scrapes and pass the dawdlers.

Throw my van around all over the place - done 107,686 miles in 15 months (nationwide same day courier), averaging around 15.3p per mie (given the massive price increases last yr) - currently runs around 13-13.5p per mile.

Throw in a diesel fuel card and it's cheap motoring all round.

And did I mention it was fun to drive ? A van. I know. Who knew ?

Love my 2015 Golf Bluemotion diesel! Plenty quick enough, good fun to drive, I think so anyway! £0 rated road tax, very economical Will probably keep it 'till they outlaw ICE cars! I'll probably be dead by then anyway hehe

Recently got a 330d convertible for the wife, I love how I'd drives, only had 4 pot diesels previously and petrols, this does the same mpg around town as her previous 1.2 2008 Peugeot.

It drives lovely, can see me having another before they are outlawed

Yeah great until you stop doing the long journeys and the DPF and EGR valve get bunged up.

The PH population very much mirrors the general population. If the Govt. announces something on diesel, you get people being knee-jerk and immediately looking to sell up .

Look at how many cars, vans and HGVs are still diesel on the roads to give an indication of widespread use.

Are car manufacturers still investing in development of diesel engines?

I don’t know the answer, but resources must be getting really stretched at the moment while they continue to develop EV technology, plus various types of hybrid while still improving petrol engines for the time being. Also a number of them seem to be hedging their bets and looking at other potential alternatives to electric. It all must be costing an absolute fortune.

Knowing that diesel is basically a dead duck now, for cars at least, I can see them being pushed to the bottom of the pile with no real chance of a resurgence.

Diesel will "rattle" on for a good few years yet, there is no viable replacement for long range passenger vehicles and transport.

But, it will come, there will be a time when new EV's just make them look like dinosaurs, but we arent there yet.

Another ten years and I expect that the EV's being produced will have overtaken and improved on anything any ICE can do in the metrics most people buy their cars on

Not sure why everyone has to pick a corner ? Pick what suits you at that point in time, dont feel the need to slag EV's or Diesels off as I have a Petrol car at the moment, I find it weird the vitriol some have for diesels (Council ffs) or particularly EV's.

I think a lot of it is fear of the unknown, its like your grandparents going on about not eating "Foreign muck" in a lot of cases, wouldn't ever try it but managed to decided anything that wasn't covered in gravy or custard was inedible. Amazing what you miss out on if you close your mind and choose a hill to die on.
