Koenigsegg Regera reclaims 0-400-0 record

It seemed Rimac had set an unbeatable 248mph benchmark - nobody told Koenigsegg or its 1,500hp twin-turbo V8

Remember when 0-100mph-0 was the performance car benchmark? Something really, really fast might sneak in under 12 seconds. Ancient history these days; if you want to be in the upper echelons of crazy quick, it’s a 0-400-0 time that’ll really demonstrate performance. That’s a standstill to 248mph and back to a stop again. In less than 30 seconds - incredible.

Koenigsegg had held the record with both the Agera RS (36.44 seconds) and Regera (31.49 seconds), before those pesky folk at Rimac swooped in just last month with a Nevera and clocked 29.93 seconds. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it broke 22 other speed records in the process. Now that record has been surpassed again, Koenigsegg rolling out a Regera once more (the final examples were built last year) to claim 0-400kph-0 in 28.81 seconds. That was broken down into 20.68 seconds accelerating and 8.13 seconds coming to a halt. While at it, Koenigsegg also did 0-250mph-0 for those of us still working in old money, which still came in at less than half a minute: 21.35 seconds reaching it, 8.25 stopping, for 29.60 overall.

The Regera was mechanically identical to that used in 2019; indeed it’s the same spec as all 80 customer cars, its twin-turbo V8 driving more than 1,500hp and more than 1,475lb ft (on E85) through the rear tyres through the Koenigsegg Direct Drive - there is no conventional transmission. What made the difference this time around was tyres - there’s now a Michelin Cup 2R that fits, where a regular Cup 2 was on before - and the use of a better surface. Where the 2019 run was a Råda airfield ‘deep in the forests of Sweden’, this attempt took place at Orebro Airport west of Stockholm. Stickier tyres and a grippier, smoother surface mean better acceleration - and a new Racelogic-verified record.

“This specific record is one that means a lot to Koenigsegg,” said Christian von Koenigsegg, “as it’s a record that covers every aspect of extreme performance. The fact that the Regera can still surprise and amaze the automotive world after all this time is a testament not only to its timeless design, but to engineering and technology that was way ahead of the curve. It’s something that makes me extremely proud, and as the Jesko customer cars are being delivered, we can’t wait to show you what’s next.” Bet Rimac has something in store, too…

What’s the method for slowing from 250mph? Just slam on?

Great thing, nice record - but something about the sound of a CVT doesn't do it for me.

This would be my go to Euromillions hypercar, great looking, innovative tech, blistering pace, rarity etc

Only boring sensible thought; how much land is it covering taking 8s to slow down from that speed? Kinda frightening and puts those 200 mph + autobahn runs in perspective effin bonkers

It is a direct drive, not CVT, or do you mean it sounds like one ?

i’m interest to know, if not “hammer the pedal and let the software sort it out” ….but whatever it is - 8 seconds of wanting to stop asap is a long time! (try counting it)

Roughly 422 metres from a quick calc off the vid - 50ish metres per second of braking!

It's not direct drive either. Uses a torque converter.

These things are a technical tour-de-force. Amazing record, but not one many owners would ever test!

Ironic as Mate Rimac supplies their electric tech to Koenigsegg...

I'm going to guess somewhere just north of 1/3 of a mile to haul down from 250. Not very scientific half of 250 add a chunk (as the top end will take longer to bleed off) divide it down to seconds and then multiply up by time to stop.

Somewhere around 530-590 metres I think.

That's a fair distance!

Why would you need to guess when it has the distance travelled on the video?

Doesn't seem too bad when you're anchoring on doing 110m/s

I thought it was electric up to a certain speed (with the engine running, so I assume that's also charging the battery) then when it's at a certain speed a clutch engages it into "direct drive" mode (drive from the batteries and engine).

I would need to know how many mpg I'm likely to get before deciding to get one.

I appreciate it's a hell of a piece of engineering, but I just cannot get my head round why you'd want a drivetrain like this.

If I've understood it correctly, you've basically got a monstrous V8 with essentially just one, incredibly long gear. So on the public road, and in fact on most every race track, you're not going to get anywhere near the redline.

From what I've read elsewhere, the drivetrain slips up to 30mph, then locks at a ratio of 1,000rpm / 30mph. So even at 120mph you're only hitting 4,000rpm (against an 8,250rpm redline).

Unless I had access to a racetrack with several miles of back straight, I think I'd just feel permanently cheated. Essentially you're driving a hugely powerful V8 that in 99%+ of circumstances (on track and off), will rev no higher than a diesel.
