Goodwood global debut for MG Cyberster

MG Cyberster will take to 'the hill' in July, marking a welcome return to sports car manufacture for the brand

We’re still a few weeks away from the Goodwood Festival of Speed, but news of what will be there is already flooding in. We’ve already reported on the Caterham 'Project V' and McMurtry Spéirling Pure, which, it’s fair to say, will sit at the sharper end of what’s going to appear in 2023 when it comes to performance and price. To say that the MG Cyberster will be at the opposite end of that scale would be wrong, but it’s unlikely to cost close to £1m. That's what a Spéirling will set you back.

There’s also not a lot to add to the article that we wrote about the Cyberster in April, but, bearing in mind that provoked quite a reaction in the forums – it is, after all, a pretty little two-door MG sports car – at the very least we thought you might appreciate some more pictures to gawp at and where to see it.

The FoS will be the car’s official global debut, and it won’t be a static affair. It will be taking to the hill twice on each day of the event, and when it’s not tackling Molecomb or dashing past the Flint Wall, it’ll be on static display at the First Glance paddock.

So what do we know about the Cyberster? Well, that it has proper wow wee doors for a start, which open up not out. Those may or may not be among the parts attributed to MG’s Marylebone studio in the UK, but we're told that it did have input into the new car's design. We also know that the Cyberster isn’t going to provide the performance of an MG Midget. Sources suggest the entry-level, single-motor version will have 315hp, while in dual-motor spec, expect around 545hp. Yes, that is the caveat: it’s an all-electric model, not a petrol car.

But still, we know that everything will be electric one day – assuming we continue on our present trajectory – and well done MG for making that future look rather more tantalising than a wander round the fridge department at Currys. And if the MG 4 is anything to go buy, MG is getting to grips with how to make cars that aren't just cheap, but fun, too.

Guy Pigounakis, Commercial Director for MG Motor UK, said: ‘We’re excited to return to the Festival of Speed and with a global debut. The Cyberster marks MG’s long-awaited return to sports car production and we’re ready to share what that exciting future looks like with this high-performance, technologically-advanced EV’.

Meanwhile, the Duke of Richmond said: ‘We are absolutely delighted that MG Motor UK will be returning to Goodwood this summer and honoured that it has chosen the Festival of Speed to host the global debut for the MG Cyberster. With such rich history between Goodwood and MG and ahead of its centenary in 2024, I’m thrilled MG will be so much part of the Festival this year.’

Looks great, that.

Good styling all round. Interesting rear end (and we all like one of those) and the doors hopefully make it into production

And no black wheels!

Happily buy one of these. As said before, Cyberster doesn’t sound great.
MGE is a good shout

Perhaps the Chinese are looking at how things are going in Europe and America and noted that cars are getting wider but parking spaces aren't....

Is the Duke sucking up to the Chinese to get them to be next years headline sponsor?

Not bad looking that. I even like the doors, must be of benefit in car parks tight spaces?

I’d rather walk than buy a car made in China. Enough of our money goes there on products without sending tens of thousands over for cars as well.

No.

But about 1% of any population are psychopaths. If these people gain power and control you are in for a bumpy ride. See history of 20th century for details.

Boycott the lot of the st in your houses or save your whinges- you’re contributing to China’s success without buying this car already. Blame the obsession with a market driven society that is willing to put a price on any and all its values.

As for the car itself, I think it looks the bks and if they get the pricing spot on like the rest of their offerings then I will happily consider purchasing one.

Like it & if it drives at least as well as the wife's MG4 it will deserve to succeed. Every time I drive the MG4 - I am constantly surprised in the drive - and that comes from an Evora & AMG owner.

If it looks like that they will need extra boats to bring them all in.
