I've just been to get some fuel for my race car and so filled up a 10L jerry can. It was not filled to the point of overflowing and probably had at least a few inches of "headspace" around the top.

All good, all straightforwards... except that the pump claims to have pumped 11.3 litres of fuel into said 10L jerry can.

The assistant tried to claim that I hadn't left any headspace and this was the reason for the discrepancy but unless I am only supposed to fill it half way and the required amount of headspace has changed since I last filled it (with 9.7L for what it is worth), I'm not buying this explanation.

So.... before I go and complain, is there any way that this could be correct?

Measure it out into a properly marked container you can trust.
Wife's measuring jug would be my choice.
Do it litre by litre, also film it for the complaint, if it comes out less.

They normally allow for extra in them to accommodate expansion when the fuel gets hot.

Why don't you pour it out and measure it yourself

Jerry cans usually have a "fill to" line. Which I assume you've exceeded.

I do this also.

I would assume you've filled the headspace, but the easiest way to check is to weigh it both full and empty, then you'll know how much fuel you've got.

If it's more than 8.5kg of fuel you've got your 11 litres-worth.
