Hi!

My vehicle is going through an insurance claim as of right now. Car was in a nasty accident, deep scratches across 6 panels which now need to be replaced. Car will need an entire repaint to match. Economically it is looking as writing the vehicle off is the better decision.

Anyway, the insurance company is requesting a receipt of purchase and V5. I am able to provide the V5 but I do not have a purchase receipt for the vehicle.

What should I communicate to the company? I do not want the vehicle to be undervalued either, and a replacement vehicle would cost more since car prices have risen.

Thanks!

Surely you have some kind of paperwork for the sale?

Why should he? I’ve only got sale paperwork for one of the six vehicles in my garage.

Nope.

I did not purchase my vehicle from a dealer.

Bank statement showing the payment?

Copy of the advert?

Could you provide any evidence of payment, eg card or bank statement?

Unless the policy was an agreed value, your purchase receipt is pretty irrelevant anyway, unless you have just bought it.

Vehicle was bought a long time ago, so copy of advert would not be available now.
Also the vehicle was bought part cash/part transfer knowing me

There was no agreed value on my insurance policy. It's one of those weird instances where another individual was using my vehicle and they took out their own private insurance policy while it was in use. They damaged the car, and now I am claiming back the damages on their policy.

Are you sure the seller didn't knock up a document in Word, dated accordingly, print it out then sign it with a squiggle that presumably is their signature and you signed it with yours?

Nope, got nothing like that haha.

I just gave the cash and he transferred the V5 to me.

I would go with "I'm sorry but I don't have the purchase receipt". It's wild, I know, but it might just work.

Think Carl w is alluding to people making their own receipts, which may or may not be fraudulent, and which the insurance company may see as a reason not to pay out. Possibly.

I always spend 2 mins on doing a written receipt which I get the buyer and seller to sign.
