Morning guys,

Had a quick question, I have replaced my private plate with another new private plate.

Just had the new V5 through, but I was hoping to get a retention certificate for the old private plate also - from googling its not clear if this is an automatic process. Should I have applied to get it on retention first, then looked to transfer (off the original plate), if so seems unnecessarily complicated (wouldn't be surprised...it is the DVLA)

Hopefully I haven't lost the first private plate! Anyone been through this process?

Cheers,
Matt

If you didn't put the first plate in retention, you've lost it.

Why would you assume that anything else would be the case?

I bought it so its mine? Why should it go back to the DVLA? That's extremely annoying if true!

You bought the right to display it on a vehicle. dVLA owns all the registration marks.

Thanks both. They could have made it a lot clearer on the process online.

They do: https://www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-registrati...

Apply to assign a number
If the vehicle is:

registered to you - apply online or by post
a used vehicle you just bought - wait for DVLA to send you a new V5C in your name before you apply online or by post
brand new - give the dealer your V750 or V778 document and ask them to apply
registered to someone else and you want the private number to be transferred to them - apply online or by post
It’s free to apply online or by post. You need the vehicle’s log book (V5C).

If you already have a private number on your vehicle, apply to take it off first. You could lose the right to use the number if you do not.

If the OP puts the second private plate on retention, would the vehicle return to the previous registration number (Private plate1) or to the original reg number?

Is it worth chancing it to get back PP1?

If you had BD58 JDW on your car, and you put A 9 on it, you wouldn't expect to retain BD58 JDW would you?

DVLA apply the rule equally. Either retain it, or lose it.
