DVLA - Quick Personalised Plate Question
Discussion
Afternoon All,
I've searched for the answer to this, but can't find it anywhere. Hoping you can help.
Essentially, I've just bought a vehicle from a local dealer. The vehicle came with a private plate on it & there was a V750 with the previous keeper's details on it in with the paperwork. He's relinquishing his rights to do anything with the plate, but the V750 only has his details on it at present (as the purchaser of the plate). I'm not down as a nominee or anything else on the form.
I've sent the V5 off to DVLA to advise them that I'm the new keeper, but not done anything with the V750 as yet.
Will DVLA automatically send me an updated V750 in my name now that the vehicle has passed into my ownership, or do I only acquire the rights to transfer/retain the plate when my ownership period comes to an end & I formally apply to do this?
Put simply, the plate has passed to me, but do I actually need to do anything to claim it at this point?
Thanks your help!

If it’s on the car and the previous owner doesn’t want it and you have sent the V5 off with the private plate on the log book then the v5 will come back with your details on it and the private plate on it also.
You can then leave it on the car or take it off if you want at a later date.
You don’t need the v750 if it’s on the car and the paperwork from what I have read.

I think you “own” the plate with the car, I would not bother allocating the plate till you sell the car, do it if you want to keep the title to the plate otherwise leave it on the car or sell the plate to the dealers who buy them.
Does the plate have any significance for you? Or for the car?
I think I am correct but probably others on here know for definite, I have a personal plate never had any bother transferring the plate to another car or keeping it in my name.

Much appreciated chaps. Sounds like I don't need to do anything else at the moment. The plate simply stays with the vehicle until/unless I pay a fee to retain or transfer it myself at some point. It's at that point that I formally acquire the rights to it & a V750/V778 is generated in my name?

CorrectIf it’s on the car and the V5 and the V5 is in your name it’s yours.
