Got talked into Admiral multicar a couple of years ago with a good teaser rate, needless to say they weren't even vaguely competitive next time, so I've ended up with having the sort out cover for 4 cars separately for the same renewal date which is an absolute ballsache, vs previously when they were staggered throughout the year.

Buying the insurance wouldn't be so bad, but of course the current insurer in each case is way higher than the best rate on comparison sites, so I am now in the nine circles of hell of trying to contact 4 separate insurers to cancel the autorenewal, which needless to say cannot be done online. Even accessing details on their websites is nigh on impossible, with one in particular refusing to acknowledge I exist despite me clicking on the link in the renewal email.

I'm sure I could be better organised but FFS the process is simply diabolical.

Rant over!

Surprised the multicar was cheaper in the first place, it never has been for me.

It's a shame really, there should be some sort of insurance that recognises that a person can only drive one car at once, so you just pay the rate of the most expensive car to fix, plus something to cover the risk of theft or fire etc that isn't related to you driving the car.

I think that it would be helpful if auto-renewal was only allowed at the original premium plus inflation, the current situation where they can auto-renew at any number they pluck from thin air is just an attempted gouge of people that aren't paying enough attention.

I had two policies with the same insurer. They suggested I move to their Multicar Policy but quoted a price that was over £100 more than the two separate policies (about 20% higher). Makes no sense to me, how are these Multicar policies sold to anyone?

Every year my Admiral multicar/house quote is ridiculous, I call them and in the space of 5 minutes it'll drop by at least a third.

It's an irritating little dance but they always come out miles cheaper than anyone else. Might regret that if I ever had to make a claim of course.

I'm in the same boat having gone multi-car/bike several years ago - I have three cars that renew on the same date at the start of January and 3 bikes in the middle of May.

The saving grace is that the policies have been very cheap for the last few years - the insurance on these six is dwarfed by the VED. However next year I suspect they'll go through the roof as I've managed to pick up an SP30, my first ever points in 38 years. I suspect something will need to be sold.

I had 9 points and it made sod all difference to my insurance, I think a single SP30 will not matter too much so hopefully no de-fleeting required!

Multicar on our two mazdas was very cheap - just over £300 for both, but changing one car to a seat meant the rate doubled, so we cancelled and went elsewhere at renewal

I've always thought the insurance should be for the person and not the car. It makes so much more sense.

What a great idea. Insurance companies need to be scrutinised in the firmest way by the regulator as the whole thing is so far removed from Treating Customers Fairly/Consumer Duty its just ridiculous.

My autorenewal for one car has gone up by nearly 63%, details not changed at all.

And to cap it all, Confused.com seems unable to provide any quotes at all. Most odd.

Insurance seems to be neither for the car nor the person...
My insurance won't cover me in another car (unless owned by someone I'm not related to, and it is insured by them, and i only get third party cover), and equally someone else can't drive my car on my insurance. The whole thing is a mess.

I should add I also found Admiral multi-car to be cheaper than insuring both separately. Then I added my home insurance to the policy as well.

A few years later the only policy I hold with them is my home insurance as they tried to substantially increase prices for insuring the cars to the point where it was worth the hassle to part ways and go with different insurers. I tried explaining this into their tin ears but they seemed impervious to reason so I left them.

I had to fight them to get away with just a minor increase in the price for the home insurance.

I like having our cars all need renewing at the same time. It means I only need to faff about once a year.

WRONG... you have an additional year of claim free driving. The price should go down!

You say convenience. I say convenience and price. If the price goes up the inconvenience of having to move to a different insurer becomes worthwhile and I did it.

How much of a price increase would cause you to want to move your policies?

It's intentional though isn't it. With things being such a mess it is great for profit.

Insurers had a bad year last year, I think claims were 109% of revenue, so we can all expect to be vigorously bummed at renewal time.

The most annoying thing with multicar policies is that you're then locked in with that provider as you can only accrue NCB on one car if you then choose two separate policies with other companies which is absurd imo.

UK car insurance is broken.

The NCB system is pretty worthless, as is protecting it.

Policy prices and renewals seem a game of smoke and mirrors.

Same for me - it’s always been double the premium for three separate cars (I can only drive one at a time and my total annual mileage is never more than 9,000 miles

That's the game of insurance. Thing is once you reach a certain age, insurance quirks can benefit you. For instance if I insure with Axa, they will mirror my no claims if I buy another car and insure with them. Then at the end of the term, I can leave Axa and take out a policy with someone else for max no-claims.

My view is that multicar is for the time poor and those drawn in by the initial attractive premium. However too many fail too realise what a that the naval insurer is rather poor.
