What would you do? Hyundai i40 222k
Discussion
I would like some general advice.
I have a 222k i40 on a 17 plate. Had it from new.
It blew a head gasket (at this point I should have thrown in the towel. Hindsight is a wonderful thing) which I decided to have repaired. The main reason being the car still drove like new, felt tight, had no rattles and everything still worked.
This week, while marvelling at how great a car it is, I noticed what sounded like a loose bit of undertray flapping in the breeze. I was on a dual carriageway doing about 65mph. I dipped the clutch and it stopped - not a good sign I think. I was was right, oil light on and the bottom end is clattering like an old locomotive over the points at Clapham Junction.
I've towed it home and it is sitting on the drive.
What shall I do with it? Ebay? WBAC? Engine from a scrapper (about £2k plus the labour, etc for fitting)? Weigh it in? Fix the bottom end?
It was only ever going to be the dog carrier/family runaround. I'm in a quandary. It had a clutch about 8k ago and has obviously got a solid top end.
I don't have the facilities or tools to take the engine out myself, but am knowledgeable enough to be a decent help to someone who does.
What do the PH collective think?

All comes down to cost and whether that particular car has any sentimental value to you.
Quick look on eBay etc and an engine (of undetermined mileage) seems to be somewhere between £1700 and £2200. An 17 plate i40 with about 100k miles on it is around £8k from a dealer. Factor in some money to do the engine swap (let’s be generous and say at mates rates you can get an engine bought and installed for £3000).
After that you’ll have your car with everything else still having done over 200k and probably worth what you spent installing the new engine at best.

Which are my thoughts. However, I reckon it would be a great car if the engine is sorted. It's such a comfortable and capable car (estate, so huge boot) for a Springer spaniel and a collie cross. My son also reckons it would make an ideal makeshift camper for his trips mountaineering.
From a garage point of view personally I’d scrap it.
You get a used engine, but while it’s out you would need various gaskets, service parts, etc. now why did the first one go bang, was it injectors, turbo …. You find with most used engines they come without these bits so you end up swapping them over. But what if the turbo was the cause ….
We had someone with a merc and despite advising them to move on we ended up putting an engine in it, then something else went, then the suspension they did sell it eventually
Even if you can get the engine out, by the time bits are swapped over and it’s fitted correctly you are into 2-3 days labour.

Personally it would be going to a scrap yard if it was mine but you seem to have some drive to have it repaired OP, if you go that route i'd favour a bottom end rebuild if it is similar cost to a engine replacement from ebay as you don't know what the engine will be like you are putting in
I don't actually need it. I have a Range Rover. I think I'm getting a bit hung up on sentiment here. I know it's been a good car. I know I could make use of it. In the same way you didn't know you needed a dishwasher until you got one
I don't quite know what to do with it. It will start, eventually but is like a bag of spanners. I could take it to WBAC but I think it would do better on ebay. But then you have the usual time wasters and tyre kickers.
