Just applied to the dvla to take a private plate off a car i own that has been on sorne to put it on one of other cars, thought it would be straight forward, they now tell me because the doner vehicle has been on sorne for over five years theytell me it has to be tax and insured.
As this is not possible, i still own the plate but cant use it. Has any body come across this problem?

Can't you just put the plate on retention until you intend to use the SORN vehicle? If its SORN it doesn't need a number plate on it anyway, does it?

It's the car the plate is currently on that is SORNed.

The only way is to get the car re-commissioned and then transfer the plate off. I believe this rule was implemented to prevent people buying ancient vehicles that had no hope of being used ever again, just to get hold of desirable plates on the cheap.
