Dystopian future; what car are you driving?
Discussion
And so it has come to pass.
It’s 2040, gantry cameras enforce road pricing by the mile.
Black boxes are mandatory.
You have to buy plant based fuel in 205 litre drums, at a cost of £600.
99% of cars are self driving, and insurance premiums increase the more active driving you do.
There are exemptions for classics, but on a strictly mileage limited basis, 3000 miles a year.
So many threads concentrate on the best daily driver or your dream 3 car garage etc.
It got me thinking. What if your car was purely a toy.
In this dystopian possible future how would you cope?
Obviously pure speed is no longer a desirable trait.
High fuel consumption is going to cripple all but the wealthiest enthusiasts.
You probably need to be able to maintain it yourself.
It has to be fun at legal road speeds. Tactile rather than competent. Handling rather than grip.
So what would you choose?
One car, to remember what driving was and enjoy it while you can.

In the unlikely event that I were to be around in 17 years time I would be 92.
However, assuming that I could still drive the toy would be something like my current Cayenne GTS...comfortable, easy to enter and exit, lots of space for the new walker and cane, and as I would be driving only a limited amount, no worries re fuel.
The nurse could sit in the passenger seat and shout to keep me awake.

what counts as classic? if its over 40 years old, then by the time 2040 rolls around, cars made before 2000 would qualify.
in which case, an early porsche boxster. 2.5, so not that fast, but naturally aspirated, flat 6, loud exhaust, really enjoy stretching out the revs. and i'd have it on small 16" wheels on 205/225 tyres, so it'd dance down a nice b road.
my current second car only does a couple of thousand miles a year, so mileage wouldn't be a problem.

Probably a Ford Focus with no number plate. Further rounds of austerity and the middle classes - in the future confined to gated estates or anarchist radical vegan communities in Wales - screaming 'Tax is THEFT! I don't care if there's no state, it's my money' will have resulted in there being no human police officers left. Good times for God knows who, although by that point we'll probably be rendering the working classes down to make the eco-bunker fuel needed to ship plant based Chinese-made degenerate art and literature incinerators over here.
