Ford confirms 480hp Mach-E Rally production

Bored of EV SUVs already? Try one with a RallySport drive mode...

Ford can always be relied on for a bit of fun. This is the company, don’t forget, that put Drift Mode in a Focus, Line Lock in a Mustang, and still sells a pick-up with a supercharged 700hp V8. Plus it has a wealth of motorsport heritage to draw upon. Bring both those factors together and a vehicle like the Mach-E Rally should come as no surprise at all. They’re even going to make it.

Jim Farley, exactly the kind of CEO you’d imagine would be right behind this project, said of the Rally: “It takes Mustang where it hasn’t been before – to gravel and dirt roads. Inspired by true driving enthusiasts, a driving experience like never before for the pure joy of driving.” That last bit feels really important, conspicuously absent as it so often can be from otherwise worthy EVs.

The Rally plunders, appropriately enough, Ford’s special stage back catalogue for its overhaul, from white wheels like an Escort Cossie to a rear spoiler said to be inspired by the old Focus RS and spotlights in the front fascia. There’s even the option of dealer-fit mudflaps for the full effect. Real rally nerds might see the Grabber Yellow here and remember the old Rapid Fit Puma S1600 cars (a livery shared with the Mondeo Super Tourer in the good old days), but that might be stretching things a tad. The Rally will also be offered in Eruption Green, Glacier Grey, Shadow Black, Grabber Blue or Star White, which might go nicely with the wheels. Told you they really were going to make it…

The Rally is much more than just a cosmetic makeover, too. It rides 20mm higher than standard on special springs, with Magneride dampers coming as standard as well as big 385mm front brakes. There’s shielding underneath to protect the motors from off-road scrapes, plus protective film applied from factory - so the Rally is very definitely designed to be used off the beaten track. Those funky rims sit on Michelin CrossClimate 2 tyres.

Further encouraging some rough and tumble is a new RallySport drive mode. It’s designed specifically for off-road driving (though sounds like a right hoot for anywhere, really), offering up ‘added yaw for bigger slides, a linear throttle response for better control, and more aggressive damping for better handling in loose corners’. Apparently, the test programme has included hundreds of miles at Ford’s Michigan Proving Ground on an off-road course designed by rallycross veterans, so let’s hope RallySport mode lives up to the hype.

There’ll be plenty of power to play with, at least, the Rally using the Mach E GT’s twin motor, 4WD set-up but aiming to improve on it with more torque. The US-specific release states that the aim is for 480hp and 650lb ft, compared to 487hp and 634lb ft for a standard GT over here. It should also get 250 EPA miles from the 91kWh battery. There’s no mention yet of any augmented sound for the Rally, but if ever there was an opportunity to pipe in sweet BDA Escort music through the speakers, surely it’s now…

"Just a year ago, this was merely an idea, and what you see today is a testament to the passion and intense creativity of our Model e team," said Donna Dickson, Mustang Mach E chief engineer. "We have always explored new areas of performance, and the combination of a rally-tuned suspension, dual motor electric powertrain, and wicked styling makes the Mustang Mach-E Rally a different kind of performance vehicle that will excite customers chasing their next adventure.”

This really will happen, too, with a US launch due in early 2024 and a predicted price of $65,000 (£52,000) over there. We have it on good authority that the Rally will make it to the UK next year as well  Camping trips with the kids will never be the same again.

Seems a bit daft making an electric rally car, if it gets crashed its a blazing inferno for hours on end, setting fire to everything around it. And the rally has to stop immediately and completely.

As a general car enthusiast am very pleased to see OEMs making weird stuff like this, and the Iqoniq 5 N thingy, but they will sell 3, and 1 may go off road. The biz case surely didnt stack up so I think its more a PR exercise to say we are trying to make 'leccy fun and 'aren't we cool' but fair enough

It does look nice but it seems like it might be worse to drive than the regular one on road and no one is taking this off road really so yeah I would rather have the regular one.

I like the look of it, and the gravel spec is probably more suited to most urban potholed and speed bump infested roads than a standard car...

An excellent idea - well done Ford.

About time we started to see a few EV's that are fun to drive, as opposed to mere appliances.

If the money is right, it will sell well.

Rally cars powered by something which can cause a fire in a crash is clearly a new and terrifying risk.

The promo video for it makes it look so very very slow. Didn't seem much in the way of dramatic yaw going on.

Compared to some of their other efforts this is a bit underwhelming.

I get the feeling the Mach E has been a bit of a damp squib for Ford, dont see many about, and much frothing about using the name on it anyway.

But, cant move round here for EV's blazing away, turn the corner and there is a Model 3 burning away merrily, and its autumn so the smell or burning Leafs will soon be upon us, actually never seen one personally and not really heard of that many.

Its funny, I know some have gone up in flames but its supercars that we tend to see locally on fire. A lot of the battery fires seem to be cheap Chinese E bike batteries, peoples personal smoke machines and the odd mobile phone, think some gets conflated into EV fires as it has a battery.

The newer batteries are also much better at not catching fire, its called progress, keep up at the back !

An EV rally car you say?

Always remember going to watch the RAC rally back in the days when Mcrae and Burns were going head to head. The thing about watching, was that in the mists of a dark Welsh forest, you could hear the flame spitting noise of the cars in the distance, for several minutes before each car arrived. Building anticipation long before the violence of each Subaru flew past. The noise and the sight of the flames from the exhausts made the whole thing to be honest. The noise echoed round the hillsides, and the hairs on the back of my neck still stand up at the memory and excitement of it all.

I can't imaging summoning up the enthusiasm to trek through a damp Welsh forest to go to watch an EV rally car cruise past in almost silence.
It’s exactly this. Things like this are the automotive equivalent of the pseudo-meat advert where the young girl says to her Dad “I don’t want to eat meat any more”. His face shows mild horror mixed with grudging acceptance that this means him, too.

On a train at the moment, when I arrive my friend of the last 30 years will pick myself and my lady up in a yellow 1998 Fiat Coupe Turbo or a dark blue 1996 Audi S8
like the one in Ronin, and bought for that reason. We’ll
go for a spirited drive then put the car to bed, then we’ll go and have some beers, and then a steak with red wine.

I prefer ur-Pistonheads and I know I’m in the quiet if not silent majority.

Sure, but that sounds truly awful, why on earth would I want to go and trouble my ears with that?

Then there was this:

https://youtu.be/mXA2OPiwZRM?si=JG1R5EyMf1KsvDhg

Speaks for itself surely.
It's subjective. Americans think the god awful racket from a cammed V8 idle sounds like power, I think it sounds broken. Imprezas don't sound particularly like rallying to me, I was last stood in the forest before they came along. If someone started watching rallying and the cars sounded like that EV, that would be the sound of rallying to them.
