Whenever I've ordered number plates before proof of id and ownership are required ie driving license and V5

Amazon took my order without a request for the V5, UK supplier DVLA approved plates etc.

How is this?

Welcome.

If they’re listed as custom / show plates then don’t need any proof etc or if from Ireland etc.

There are fairly tight regulations regarding making number plates but there are some loopholes. Everyone I know does it correctly but nobody has ever had an audit so I guess it’s more the fear of loosing your plate making licence and doing it correctly.

I bought a new set recently from an online store, 100% legally spaced, BS mark, maker's info etc.

Never asked for any ID or documents when purchasing..

I guess you would need to loosen the screws to change the plates but please ensure you tighten them up properly afterwards to make sure you don't lose them!

Not having a go but lose / loose really winds me up for some reason! It can make me almost loose lose my st!

They are a registered number plate supplier, and the DVLA rules (which I think form part of the law) state that they need records of entitlement to hold the plate. I think some have interpreted "original documents" to mean that the company making the plate must have sight of the physical document in person, but I haven't heard of the DVLA taking action against mail-order suppliers who do require a scan/photo of the documents. However if you didn't show anything relevant, or a "View Vehicle Record" code, then it is clearly outside the rules:

I think the only way to get a plate is to use a company outside the UK (and hence not bound by the rules), there's a popular one in Ireland. AFAIK they are completely legal so long as it has the maker's address. There is no requirement in law to use plates from a registered number plate supplier.

edit: The DVLA's "find a supplier" does imply that they do not endorse mail-order plates though, for example Halfords has a link to their website, but the website https://www.ukregplates.co.uk/ is listed on it with a postal address, email address and phone number, but no website address. On their website it says they are "not open to visitors for security reasons" (it appears to be a block of residential flats).
