Modified Car - Car Insurance
Discussion
Hi,
Have a MK6 GT-TDI - am looking to get a MK7 GTI, and wanting to do some mods.
If the car gets written off, then will only get the market value, and all money putting into mods will be lost
Are there any insurance companies which will pay market value + fixed amount on top.
e.g if car worth 15k and do 5k mods.
Then will pay out the market value, plus an agreed fixed extra (cost of mods)
Thanks
Freddie

Used to be with A-Plan, who do this. Always found them pleasant to deal with. However, they were £100 more expensive than the competition this year so I'm with Sterling who offer similar.
They will do what you need, but obviously it'll cost a fair bit more than a policy for a standard car.

An apt thread to pop up on my 'new' subjects. I've just rang AXA to declare some aftermarket stainless exhaust tips (playing safe, so not to risk anything) After a painful 50 minute chat, they've stated it's not a modification on their list, so they can't cover. An utter joke, it's a visual enhancement, no more. Best check if our house is insured with them, incase we ever change the colour of the front door.
I had a fairly heavily modified Seat Leon Cupra R (mk1) for a few years a while back. I used Adrian Flux to insure it for a couple of years, then heard about a company called Need To Insure (clicky). They're a broker and are familiar with getting insurance for modified vehicles, amongst other things. I found them very helpful and it was far easier explaining some of the modifications to them than someone in a call center with very little knowledge of cars at all, let alone modifications etc. I'd use them again without hesitation, give them a shout.

This was very much the case. I was asked 'where do they go' er, the clues in the name, exhaust tips, 'what do they do' er, the same as the old ones, it was all properly computer says no stuff.Fermit said:

I had the same once , can't remember what firm it was but one of the modifications I'd done was an upgraded dump valve (the car had one as standard as it was turbocharged). I got through various modifications, explaining what they were and how they should be categorised, then we got to that and they said "oh no we can't cover you if you've fitted a dump valve to the car." No amount of reasoning made any difference.I guess the situation might be similar to owning a classic car, which goes up in value.
Instead of the market value slowly creeping down overtime, they must be insured for a new increased value each year......
But as a general rule if anybody has any experience, how much more is modified car insurance ?
I am 35 clean license, NCD 5 years - would be about £300-400 full comp on a MK7 GTI before mods

Two years ago when I had my ED30, it cost me no more to add my lowering springs, intake and exhaust systemInstead of the market value slowly creeping down overtime, they must be insured for a new increased value each year......

A 70bhp hike in power added a whole £30 a year.
(31 driving since 17 and full ncd) and that was with Admiral. They've always been good with mods but no idea what wouldn't happen it comes to claiming.
On my current 330i, an intake added £10-20 from what I can remember and most wouldn't cover lowering springs.
I even had some companies refuse to quote on the car as standard (which I still struggle to understand)
Can't remember the name of the guy at Keith Michaels , but again when I had a Impreza he was mustard at sorting out insurance, well worth giving them a ring.
Currently flux gave me a good quote for the mini, so use them. And performance direct gave a good guaranteed value policy for the TVR.
Usual caveat, until you claim, you've no idea how good any of them are.
