Anyone else having problems? Can’t tax the wife’s car online. Keeps saying details can’t be found.

I taxed two of my cars this evening - I used the V5 for each rather than the reminder, I had to have a couple of attempts before the system would accept them, initially I got the same response as you had when I entered the details.

Perhaps with trying with the V5 ?

That is with the V5C. She’s had it for 18 years and nothing has changed. Must be a glitch in the system.

I had a similar ( ish ) problem recently when selling my wife's car
All my own fault as usual
What had happened was that after buying the car it was put on a private plate for a few years. Then prior to selling it was put back onto it's original plate
This meant that I had 2 V5Cs for the car with identical details, apart from the document's date of issuance and reference number
Because of this I spent a pleasant time trying to transfer the car to the new owner using the original V5C until I realised that I had a more recent document
The transfer was a lot easier using the correct document

9.00 on a Sunday evening? Possibly system is having an update/funny5minutes/cba. Might be feeling better on a weekday.

18 years is a long time with one car, so it is possible you were sent an updated V5c at some point, the format has changed over time. So perhaps you are using the number from the old V5C? A replacement V5c would have a different document number.

Most things online at DVLA only work between the hours of 07:00 - 19:00. Try again during the day, this may be the issue.

That's only for change of registered keeper, usually. I declared a car SORN at 23:45 a couple of years ago (nearly forgot and lost another month eek), and bought VED after 19:00.

^^^This, they only open until 7pm so you cannot do anything after this time.

Tried again this morning at 6am, still didn’t work. Wife went to the Post Office instead earlier and went through. Must have been the time of day?

What? I always tax my cars online and they would all get done well after 7pm as I'm not at home before then. Never had any problem taxing a car "out of hours"

At the Post Office, they scan the barcode on the V5c, which has 24 digits under it, perhaps a different database access? scratchchin

So it was either a DVLA online issue as you mentioned, or perhaps a erroneous digit or letter on the V5c? Glad you managed to tax it. smile
