Renaultsport Clio 200 Gordini | Spotted

Ignored when new, now one more way into a legendary hot hatch

Funny cars, the most recent Renault Gordinis. Here was a pair of cracking Renaultsport hot hatches in the Twingo 133 and Clio 200 (and the Wind, don’t forget), commemorating an iconic name in motorsport history, at a time when hardcore hot hatches were much more popular… that amounted to little more than a paint job. Even the Cup chassis was optional. What ought to have been a fitting motorsport-inspired special became, really, a limited edition in a nice blue.

But that sounds an awful lot like the contemporary assessment from the early 2010s. Under the objective microscope, the Gordinis didn’t offer an awful lot more for their premium; it was possible to spec a Clio up to beyond £20k and still have the same experience as one that cost a lot less. For the hot hatch purist, surely the market that Renaultsport appealed to most, the Gordini represented style over substance. And that’s not the R.S. way. But look what’s happened in the decade or so since the Gordinis. Nobody outside of Renault could have known back then the drastic direction the hot hatches (and the Wind) were to be taken in. Perhaps the response might have been a little kinder had we known what was coming.

At the end of the day, these remained the same brilliant Twingo and Clio, albeit in jazzy new colour scheme and a limited run for a bit more money. Now there’s no premium attached to them, the Gordinis make an interesting alternative to the usual full-fat, Cup-chassis’d cars that are so often highlighted. It might not be Liquid Yellow or Alien Green, but Gordini Blue still looks great, for starters. Amazingly enough, white or black were also available - good luck finding one of those…

Anyway, the Gordini in question. Mercifully, this one goes without the blue painted wheels that were so often seen, only keeping the white accents that were standard on all. It also doesn’t have the Cup chassis, either, that was £410 back in the day, though that’ll be good news for some. Hardly like the 200 was bad to drive without it; these are feted hot hatches for very good reason in any guise.

This Clio has had quite a few owners for its near-90,000 miles, which can be a concern (speaking from personal experience!) because you just don’t know how a car has been driven by those other folk. But these cars compel you to drive them hard, which is one of the reasons why they’re loved. Encouragingly for Gordini Series number 0429 of 500, there are plenty of service stamps in the book, the big cambelt and water pump change earlier this year (less than 5,000 miles ago) and a condition that must be better than average. There aren’t signs of excessive wear on the seats, wheel, or gearknob, the paint looks great and the wheels seem free from significant damage. We’ve surely all seen far less presentable 12-year-old Renaultsports.

The price is £7,499, which seems fair given it’s hard to find a Clio 200 of any description for much less than £7k. The glory days of £5k good’uns seem done now, sadly, which was inevitable. For many if not most, this era of Clio is the ultimate evolution of the time-honoured pocket rocket formula: rorty 16-valve engine powering the front wheels, manual gearbox in the middle, built as light as possible and offered as cheaply as was realistic. As so many that went before it in the same vein appreciated, so too the Clio. And with low mileage examples already on offer at almost twice the price of this Gordini, don’t delay. It’s hard to imagine this ever being a £20k Clio ever again, but there aren’t many, if any, hot hatch legends left that now stand to become more affordable.

Surely the red brakes suggest that this car does have the Cup chassis?

Regardless, these never appealed to me much. I think the colour is one of the worst offered, and the white bits don't really do anything for it. I always thought these looked best in a flat colour like white, Racing Blue or red. Seems to suit the racy vibe better than most of the metallic and pearl colours.

Always wanted a fast Clio of some sort and still think this generation look great. Never did as the running costs seemed more than a 330i and the on road performance & comfort both worse.

Now I'm older and have been introduced to track days, totally understand where your money went on the clios and re considering one as a toy. No interest is running one as daily though.

This does look great, I do like the Gordini blue with white accents, I don't like the admin fee charged on top of the price though, that really annoys me for some reason.

Is it true that these Clio's have a habit of treating gearboxes like consumables or is that just online hearsay?

Appreciate it's a special edition, but for the money (or similar ball park) I'm sure you could pick up something a bit lower mileage and a bit more refined for daily use - which for me it would be and therefore I'll pass. Probably good fun ripping around a track if those red brakes suggest it's a Cup.

I don't get it either.

For the sake of £50 why put something in the advert that might put some customers off?

It does seem slightly pointless. Why not just account for it in the asking price? I don't see the need to even mention it.

The 197/200 did have a lot of issues with gearbox syncros in the early days, and there are plenty out there that are a bit crunchy, particularly into third. There are some improved parts out there now though, and plenty of people who offer recon gearboxes, so it's not the end of the world. You just have to have a bit of mechanical sympathy too. The gearbox in these is better than the one in the 172/182, which can crack casings etc when used really hard.

Looks good value for the money. Always liked that colour. Wouldn't bother me about numerous owners, that's the way with cars of this ilk.

Loads of these car dealers do it now, I’m like you and would avoid the car. It’s clearly a negotiation tactic and the “one thing” they can move on to agree a deal. Meh.

I had a white cup 200. While it was lovely, and extremely fast on B roads (Hartside pass was brilliant in it), it did indeed eat its gearbox, twice in 15k.

If any dealer chargers an admin fee on top I walk away from the car out of principal.

Admin fee is a joke - it’s just one aspect of selling the car and should be part of the advertised price.

It’s like McDonald’s charging extra for salt on the chips but you don’t have the option of having them without salt.

No thanks, I’ve worked long enough in the trade to know it’s pure nonsense.

What is it with Renaults and gearboxes ? We had an R5 1.7 that had its box "pop its cogs", know two folk who had the last Laguna that both had gearboxes fail, chap I worked with had part of the gearbox from his Megane Scenic as a pen holder on his desk. Plus various others, might just be a small sample, but with this, makes me think its a weak link on a lot of them over the years.

These seem to excel on track but are a bit like hard work on the road.

I own a Clio RS200 Cup (in white), only purchased as a stop gap between cars but 2yrs on it still here! Its half the power of my previous cars but double the enjoyment when kicking its head in down my local country roads, can't see myself ever getting rid unless it either blows up or I run out of talent. Thankfully I've had no issues with mine other than a loose map sensor which is a known fault on these and easily fixed with an after market bracket. They do also have issues shearing the downpipe flexi so I've added a uprated engine mount to hopefully prevent this.
The gearbox crunch is a well documented fault, I've driven a friends who's box crunched from 3rd to 4th and his had sub 20k on the clock, thankfully no issues with mine and its just turned over 80k, I do always let the car warm up properly before pressing on and also rev match on downshifts, so far so good.

Mrs hates it though, says I'm too old (37) and that its too loud and brash....

It would stop me contacting them in the first place. I suspect I'm not alone.

That looks good value - Lotocub has a ratty old 197 and it's an amazing handling thing, if somewhat lacking in grunt. Absolute bds to work on though

I'll flag this to him as it looks rather nice

If she loves you, she'll let you keep the car if you want to.

Anyway, I've always liked these - although the white bit on the front bumper looks weird on this. I think I'd prefer the earlier version without.

If i didn't already have a weekend toy i'd be tempted for sure. For the money this looks a fun place to be. 200 BHP should be enough for most folks in this size of car unless of course you were looking to track it.

Most of these are tracked - my son and his mates have one each and they all track.

Like an old Mini what they lose on the straights they more than make up for in the corners

I have a weekend toy and keep looking at RS Clio's as a daily. I'm not sure if the market is strong, these are underpriced, or now is the time to get one while the good ones are left.
