Security: Disklock, Crooklock etc.

True, but it's mostly about deterring them. One of those v's the same car without one means they'll go for the one without.
Disklok's are better, but they are proper bulky and get stupidly hot (untouchable hot) in the summer, plus you will probably want the steering wheel protector thing they sell too otherwise it will start wrecking the wheel, they also don't fit on fat steering wheels and don't spin like they're supposed to.

My take is that a steering wheel lock is a visual deterrent to the relay theft thief, as they are armed with electronic tools as opposed to traditional methods.
I have the one above that is not recommended.
Personally I would recommend it, and it is better than nothing.
I accept that the whole steering wheel lock is “better” but less convenient and therefore less likely to be used when popping to the corner shop, or to fill up.

Had a disklok on an older car. Visually it might put people off but I'd guess if someone really wanted the car then attacking it with a grinder would be a pretty quick process.
I have a disklok and, while a grinder might do a job on it, I’m not sure any crims are going to want to generate all that noise in the middle of the nightDaveyBoyWonder said:

There are a few videos on YouTube where they've tested them and removed them, but loads of noise doing it. I recently saw a video on an Audi RS6 with one on.. they just blow torched the front door lock, went inside the house and one of them put his hand over the door bell camera, then they'd got the disklok off (you don't see that part as the camera is covered but they must have had the key) put the car in reverse and took it.
One comment on one video said that his car got stolen and they drove it with it still on it. I don't believe that at all, the bar that sticks out would get in the way as soon as you went to steer. It's bad enough putting one on and hitting the windscreen with it!

Depends on the car and the value of it, whether financial or sentimental.
You could start off simple with a car battery isolator. Then there are the steering wheel locks you are considering. You could have a removable steering wheel hub if the car has no airbag and go all belt and braces with a pedal locking box that many Defender owners use.

I suspect any kind of lock that's a good visual deterrent will help.
Yes, if criminals really want a car they're going to get it. Whether it's smashing a door in for the keys, angle grinding a lock off etc. Nothing is 100% fool proof but if you can deter some chancers from your car to go and find easier pickings then it's all a plus.
I've heard those Disklock types are the trickiest to remove. I quite like the idea of the ones that lock pedals in place but not sure how effective they are in reality.

Thanks chaps.
It’s purely sentimental. Old golf so worth nowt. But I’ve spent a lot under the bonnet to get it running sweet and I’m rather fond of it. Nobody’s going to be committing a home invasion to get it, but I’d be sad if some scrote took it and burnt it out just because it was easy.
Yeah a steering lock should put most opportunists off. As already mentioned maybe fit a kill switch too? or an alarm & immobiliser? It’s purely sentimental. Old golf so worth nowt. Check out the Milenco Bar.
This is what I have, as the shape means it can be taken off and stowed fairly easily.I accept that it's probably not as totally secure a full Disclok - but as others have said, it's mainly a deterrent against relay theft. I also disable the key at night and keep it away from the door. I had a disklock and I think they are the best of their type.
They are heavy and a pain to lumber on and off the wheel and store inside the car.
And you have to get the knack of doing it as you will whack yourself and the car to bits fighting with it.
I only used it if parking away from home and for decent length of time.

I bought a Tevlaphee Steering wheel lock last year when I was staying with in-laws and there was a couple of thefts and a few car break ins. £40+_ from Amazon. Very sturdy and reckon it would take 'em a while to cut through it. Mines now parked right in front a load of cameras on the the 'Elderly Peoples Retirement Complex' opposite my block of 4 flats, so fairly secure, but I use it automatically now! I'm tucked away at the end of a no through road so little traffic apart from residents and visitors, and customers of the best body repair shop in the area! Purely coincidental that! Still use the crook lock though, only put it in the boot if I'm driving out of town. If any little s
t tried to cut it off there'd be plenty of noise and people would be straight out! Elderly people can get pretty vocal when they get annoyed
Mines a 15 plate Golf in good nick and I'm pretty possessive about it! Still listed on Amazon if you want to check the write up.Forums | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
