SsangYong - What am i missing?
Discussion
Seen a few of these on the roads now but haven't got a clue about where the dealer is.
Anyway, seems like an up and coming Korean(?) brand, have a deal with Merc to use some of their technology and seem reasonably priced.
Considering Kia was an unknown until a few years ago, i would think in the next 5 years or so, we could be seeing a lot more on the roads providing they reinforce their dealer network.

They'll have to make them a lot less ugly before that will happen.

Those are 10 year old dead models.
New range looks much more modern and certainly not too different from other makers offerings..

Ssangyong are about to be rebranded as KGM. Some of their upcoming and current cars look a lot less awkward than their historic lineup. I know a few people who run Ssangyong pickup trucks for work and they are very pleased with them, replaced Mitsubishis now they are no longer on sale in the UK. I was in Cardigan in the spring and they were everywhere as there is a dealership in town.
Their sales are on the up and I can see them increasing their market share further. The pick up is a good cheap work horse and the Rexton is like a cut-price Landcruiser. The upcoming Torres looks like it could be a pretty decent car. I couldn't give a toss about brands and would certainly consider one as a family/work vehicle if it ticked the right boxes, as I need something that can carry a lot of kit and manage forest/farm tracks

Aside from the pickups (which seems to be a market that's a bit unusual, being dominated by "a bit cheaper, and not all that worse, so okay" buys) you don't see many about.
I've seen a few reviews regarding their small hatch and it sounds like they're still in transition, not trash that can only sell on warranty/price but still not up there as per Kia and Hyundai.

They've been manufacturing for decades. Like a Korean version of Isuzu.
To me they look like they could be an Isuzu, or a Mitsubishi. Theyve been on the caravanning radar for a while as I've seen a lot of caravans being towed by them. They were hideously ugly but I guess like others e.g Kia & Skoda, eventually they'll gain the credibility in design to be a bigger share of the market
My dad has a 2017 Rexton which he got after a succession of Landcruisers - the Toyotas just got bonkers expensive.
It’s a dark met blue and I think it looks pretty smart, very reminiscent of a Merc ML. It’s very well equipped, even the back seats are heated, 7 seater. Apart from a couple of front springs and some brake pads it’s never gone wrong. 3.5T towing capacity. Paint finish nice and deep. Can’t fault it really - I’d trust it to take me on a trip across the outback, not something I’d trust to a Land Rover.
Dealers are utter dogs
t, and appear to be very short lived. If they could get that sorted they’d do better I think.

Although generic in style, they are adequate and inoffensive, even more so when you look at the prices. As several on here have commented, this was the way that Kia , Hyundai got a foothold on the UK market. The price is the thing if you are an ordinary A to B driver who is by no means a car buff ,I guess these would suit, especially if you valued new over used. No, I don’t have one but can recall the sales success of Lada and Proton with far worse cars.
I see a few around as I live near a dealer that sells SsangYongs (and, inexplicably, also Corvettes and Challengers).
They look fairly straightforward as modern cars go, and whilst not as popular as Teslas (I live in Surrey), there are definitely more around than there were a decade ago, where you'd hardly ever see one.

SsangYong have been around for decades. I think they first came on the scene in the UK when they launched a Prado look alike with a Mercedes engine in the early 90s. I was in Oman in the late 90s & we had a fleet of Prados, there also seemed to be one Muso. Every morning it seemed to have the bonnet up as they tried to start it! .
Parts prices used to be crazy for them if I remember correctly.
Around 2006 ish I remember someone trying to buy new discs and pads for one of the Ssangyong 4x4's (I'm sure it was a Musso) and the front pads were around £250 and front discs were over £400!
The guy was expecting the parts to be cheap for his budget 4x4 but with prices like that(even more so back then) I'm sure its cheaper to scrap them once they reach a certain age.
We had quite a few Rextons around here at one point but you jdont see many Ssangyongs over 5+ years old.

Well i suppose parts and their prices and availability would be a bit more inline with the competition otherwise it seems like a pointless exercise surely?Around 2006 ish I remember someone trying to buy new discs and pads for one of the Ssangyong 4x4's (I'm sure it was a Musso) and the front pads were around £250 and front discs were over £400!

Having said that, all makers are struggling with parts supply at the moment!
