I wonder if anyone else has any experience of a 'lost' personal number with the DVLA ?

Long story short, I have apparently 'lost the rights' to a private number I bought 30 years ago and had on retention.
The DVLA documentation explains that without renewal at the appropriate time, the plate will be 'lost'. Mea culpa.

However, at the time of placing the registration number on retention, a transfer fee of £80 was also paid.
This transfer can clearly not take place any longer. So what happens to the £80 paid for an admin service which will never be actioned ?
In writing, the DVLA have responded to my request for a refund, declining any claim !

Anybody been down the same route ?
Who is the DVLA answerable to ?
Any ideas who may have some clout that I can write to ??

Insult added to injury, frustrated, seething, etc ...

You paid £80 to put the plate on retention. They have done that for you. Why should you be entitled to a refund?

At the time, it was clearly stated that the plate can remain on retention for up to 10 years unless you decide to remove it from the retention register. After 10 years, you must either renew your number plate retention, or register a vehicle with the number plate.

You have chosen to ignore the 10 year rule. Why is the DVLA at fault?

Did they send you a reminder letter or something?

I would expect a good months warning on the matter, seeking to extract some more money from you at the very least.

If it's any help, my view of DVLA is poor, however it is the same for pretty much the rest of the state these days.

God knows. From a quick look at the DVLA website it seems very clear that you pay the £80 in order to be able to take a private plate off a vehicle and put it on retention for ten years. Which is exactly what the DVLA did. If you don't bother to assign it to another vehicle or put it on retention again before the ten years is up that's entirely your look out. If you bought tickets to a concert you'd hardly expect a refund if you forgot to go to it, no matter how much seething you did.

I think the OP is referring to the transfer fee that was also paid. But no transfer was possible after losing the right to display the plate. So asking for the transfer fee back rather than the retention fee?

Struggle to see how it is the DVLA's fault that you let the retention lapse.

Well known it is only 10 years and you have to renew

The OP paid an £80 fee to put the plate on retention. End of.

Many replies here completely missing the point and/or not understanding what they are commenting upon.

Perhaps I didn't spell out the situation well enough.
When my plate was put on retention, the paperwork states a £25 admin fee (to place the plate on retention) and a £80 pre-paid fee to transfer the plate to another vehicle.

I accept that I am at fault regarding the loss of the plate (even if I think it is a rort).
However, there was paid a fee for a service which has been made unavailable to me. (Hence insult to injury).
It is this transfer fee which I feel should be refunded, and have asked (via this forum) if anyone has experience of.

I might be misunderstanding but how long has the plate been on retention ?

30 years?

It used to be the case that if a retention document had expired you could get it reinstated easily enough

That changed some time ago sadly so it is now lost

It is a shame because the number essentially gets scrapped so you lose, the DVLA lose and that number can never be sold or used again.

Some good numbers are being lost this way.

The retention document is in the process of being changed but nothing has happened yet.

You paid a fee to retain the registration which also allows you to put it on another car, you failed to do that within the allowed timeframe nor did you renew the retention, struggle to see how you can believe you are due a refund, it is not the DVLA's fault.

If you had a valid retention certificate you can return that to the DVLA and have a refund of the £80 but you agree to lose your rights to the registration.

To clarify, from the V778/1 I have on file ;

"The current fee (£105 at the time of printing). This represents the £25 retention fee and the £80 assignment fee."

The plate and retention fee are lost.
No assignment was ever requested or completed (although pre-paid). Why should the assignment fee not be refunded or refundable ?

I have my retention certificate in front of me and it clearly states that a refund of the assignment fee is only possible if it's claimed before the expiry date of the certificate.

I see it as being a little bit like a gift card for a store, if you don't use it you tend to lose it.

Yeah, I being lost forever seems a great shame.

I have a plate on retention. You've reminded me to scan in the certificate and put an entry in my calendar with reminders 1 week, 4 weeks and 8 weeks before expiry to ensure this doesn't happen to me.
