Audi S4 Avant (B6) | Spotted

Fast, handsome, manual V8 wagons are much loved and hard to find - this S4 ticks all the boxes

Barring something epic appearing beyond the current RS6 Performance (which is already pretty mighty), the days of the V8 Audi Avant are numbered. For much the same reason that so many other iconic performance cars are doomed. Hope still lingers for the petrol-electric RS wagon era - or even an EV one, not least because the e-tron GT is fantastic - though the eight-cylinder cars will be very sorely missed.

The best RS6s were V8-powered, as were the best RS4s - their powertrains played a huge part in that. Not just in the crazy high revving, manual, unrepeatable days, either. When the RS6 switched out its V10 for a V8, a better car resulted. It hasn’t just been the RS models that have benefitted from the engine configuration, however, as back in the good old days there were S models of the A4 and A6 that boasted a V8. Cars just like this S4, in fact.

Nowadays, an S4 and RS4 offer a package quite a lot like their rivals: six turbo’d cylinders, four-wheel drive, eight-speed auto. They’re good enough, but nothing particularly marks them out. Whereas this era, the B6 that’s often forgotten about because it didn’t boast an RS4, offered something not available anywhere else 20 years ago: a compact, handsome family wagon, with a V8 and a manual gearbox.

Which, of course, wasn’t very popular at all. Buyers of this type of car typically want an automatic, because it’s better suited to life as a family holdall. Search for any of these S4s nowadays and the majority are autos. The odd manual does emerge, however, and it’s hard to not be excited by the prospect when they do. An auto from the early 2000s won’t be fun at all; a manual from the early 2000s could still be, and there’s plenty to be said for the rarity factor as well.

These S4s are still a whole lot more affordable than their RS counterparts, too. The B7 RS4 in particular is a much more specialised, more rewarding performance car, but the best examples of those are now £30k. This B6 is just £8,490. Sure, it doesn’t rev as high and it won’t handle as ably - yet it looks like a lot of V8 manual uberwagon for a chunk less than £10k.

It genuinely looks a good’un, too, which can’t always be said for old, powerful Audis. Old, powerful examples of anything that’s become cheap, for that matter. There’s been one advisory in the past eight MOTs (for a numberplate lamp), the service history is said to be mainly Audi main dealer and, while the mileage has now exceeded 100,000, the total averages out at less than 5,500 a year. And isn’t it nice to see an exterior colour that isn’t black, silver or grey?

Encouragingly, furthermore, the last owner has had this car since 2016, so it hasn’t been pushed from pillar to post in recent years as it’s become most affordable. There’s only ever so much to be gleaned from images, but there must surely be many less presentable 20-year-old Audis out there. The ad’s claim of future classic status should probably be taken with a pinch of salt (because that space is probably occupied by the manual RS cars), but for a taste of the old ways with a healthy dose of practicality on top, a lot worse could surely be done. This looks great.

Had a manual one about 12 years ago and loved it. It had a Militek non resonated exhausted and sounded amazing. Didn’t handle but that wasn’t the point. Looked great and still does. Always felt special. 6th too short on motorway and timing chain at back of engine obviously. One of the few cars I’ve made money on - exported it to NZ when I worked out there briefly.

I had an 04 plate auto. Great car, my first Audi. Sounded great, comfortable, went well apart from..... I bought it from a back street garage, didnt test drive it properly, the gearbox started slipping under load, took it to a back street transmission shop, they ripped me off and didn't fix it so I swapped it for an A6 quattro. Lesson learnt, had an Audi ever since. I have an S4 diesel now, would I have another V8 S4 - yes.

These look appealing at this money but I’d want to check the timing chain and tensioners had been done I think before taking the plunge, otherwise your £8K V8 could very easily become a £12K V8 (or worse).

I’m sure these have been £8.5k forever. Used to be a bit of a bargain, but just seem old now. Nuclear reactor-esque maintenance costs with the timing chain, too.

Seems not that long ago that these were 20k cars all day long.

I’d be tempted at this price if I didn’t have a toy already, and lived up hilly ground that needed 4wd during the winter

Do like these. Silly engines estates always have an element of natural entertainment to them. It's a nice engine in these and a good sound.

I seem to recall this generation of Audi was still addicted to VW's 80s/90s love of comedy understeer?

What's up with the front passenger seat? Has the car been used as a specialist Uber for sweaty lardarses? It's unusual to see a passenger seat more knackered than the driver's outside of Mercedes.

Sensible price for a change, yes they'll need maintenance but it's sub £9k to start with. Get it thoroughly checked and someone's getting a classy bargain

This was mine. An absolutely superb car! My wife still thinks it was the best car we ever had and she liked nothing that came afterwards as much as the Audi.

Auto gearbox oil changes every 40-60k miles and/or a proper flush is a must with these!

Mine developed the same fault. I sold it for peanuts declaring the fault and then the buyer immediately sold it on for tripple the price (without the expensive Sportec wheels). Another experience who has lead me not to deal with certain people if buying or selling stuff ....

Passenger's seat aside, that looks like a very nice car. The timing chain needs a check, and the seller needs to learn some punctuation, apart from that it's a good find.

When Audi were the masters of subtle exteriors and great interiors. How times change !

So true, spot on. Sadly, I'd say the very same of BMW! smile

Foggy headlights and filthy looking seats aside (both easy fixes), that looks great. Think I'd prefer a more subtle colour than nogaro blue but I really like this shape A4, one of my favourites.

These fall into the excruciating running costs for not 'that' much performance category for me.
Used to drive an S5 and I thought it felt slow given the figures.
Lovely engine though.

Always liked the B6 S4. Great looking car. I wouldn't want one though. A good friend of mine took me out in his, there was a 123d 1 series in front of us and he spotted us in his mirror. He floored it, and and I'm sorry to say he left us for dead!! Put me right off.

I looked at these long and hard before getting my last car but the running costs and potential for ruinous repair bills put me firmly off. I don't believe they're easy to work on yourself meaning most jobs require it to go to a specialist.

This one ticks a lot of boxes however there are a few big red flags for me. It appears to have been given a dealer special once over with the shiny stuff inside and out but not actually cleaned properly, no mention of any of the huge jobs that should have been done at this age/mileage and a dealer website with an eclectic mix of stuff but not in a good way who also just cuts and pastes every description. Coupled with every cliche in the book in the description underneath ("will only go up in value", "future classic" etc) this one needs a lot of checking out before parting with cash.

Might be an absolute steal though if it all checks out as it's in the perfect spec.

To be honest, I don't think Audi have gone that far away from their roots. The current S4 is relatively bland with a normal interior. BMW have always had an issue. I recall my 540 had plastic fake wood in places that wood would never have been used and my 340 had the most ghastly colour stripes in the dash and a general interior that was starting to hint at trying too hard. I think the Audi A4/S4 interiors are still relatively staid.

What the two of you said is unfortunately true....

I even did a thread about this some years ago: Why do these dirty Diesels have to be so damn fast??
They are "slow" for a "performance" midsize estate by today standard. And due to the lack of a forced induction they feel even slower. They make a lovely sound and are hugely characterful tough! And they are built like few cars since.

People are often commenting on how well built the Merc R129 SL was, but the Audi S4 B6 felt much more solid than the old SL. I know, because I have one of those as well.

I’ve always liked these.

The B6 always felt really well made and was quite a handsome, subtle looking thing. They do sound good too especially with a cheeky aftermarket exhaust.
