Bentley Continental GT | Spotted

Celebrating the W12 doesn't need a £2m Batur - the best Continental GT is now from five per cent of that

They always say you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone, and perhaps that’s now true for the Bentley W12 engine. The last one will be made in April as Bentley continues on its path to electrification; and after years of proclaiming the 4.0-litre V8 to be the engine to have where available, now it isn’t hard to find those admitting to how much they’ll miss the big 6.0-litre.

For some, the twin-turbo W12 was the only possible choice for a Continental GT or Bentayga as the largest, most powerful engine available. And even in less powerful installations than the recent GT Speed and 740hp Batur, it was a mighty powertrain, hugely torquey and with an unmistakeable soundtrack. Modern Bentley doesn’t really exist without that 12-cylinder engine. So it should be little surprise that it’s getting the proper Crewe send off, including the Edition 12 limited editions.

That being said, you don’t need a new Speed, or Batur, or Edition 12 to experience why the 6.0-litre is so admired. Heck, there are still £15k Continental GTs out there for the really brave, or 600hp+ Speeds for less than £30,000. A lot of W12 for the money. Arguably the engine has never found a better home, though, than in the current Continental GT. A lot has happened, to put it mildly, throughout the automotive world since its 2018 introduction, but nothing should detract from the Mk3 Conti GT as one of the best Bentleys ever made.

Pairing the W12 with a dual-clutch transmission worked wonders for responsiveness; a brand-new platform meant this finally drove how we’d always a Bentley super tourer would. The styling, though familiar, was now properly handsome rather than merely agreeable. And the interior was a revelation. It’s easy to be a bit blase about Conti GTs given their ubiquity, but this latest one really remains something very special. And even those less committed fans of the W12 must concede that the GT experience will lose something when production finally ends.

This one intrigues as an early 2018 car that’s a whisker over £100k; it is now possible to pay five figures for a third gen car, though it’ll have higher mileage than the 17k recorded here. We’re suckers for Newmarket Tan leather wherever it’s seen, and contrasts smartly here with the Onyx Black exterior. This Conti also benefits from the Bentley Rotating Display option (imagine having to go without it) and the Mulliner Driving Specification.

With 635hp, there’s precious little lost out in terms of pure power to the 659hp Speed. By the stats this is a 207mph Bentley, if speed really does matter - no V8 or EV will match that. It seems that interest in the W12 can only increase as its demise looms, even with so many out there. This one ought to serve as a reminder of the 6.0-litre’s charm very nicely indeed.

Of course, these are expensive cars to run. Never mind the fuel costs. This one, after just 17k miles, cost more than three quid per mile just through depreciation.

I would love one of these.
The previous shape didn't look great to me which always put me off.
They got the looks just right this time.

At that sort of price point, also taking into account age, mileage, and other factors, surely this is the absolute best car for this sort of job?

I don't have £100k to buy one and truthfully, I wouldn't buy one even if I had the money.
I just don't need it for my 13-mile commute and I couldn't see myself using it as a weekend toy.
But I'll forever wish I had a job with a 2-hour commute that pays enough to buy and run a CGT for that fantasy commute!

This model pulled off the magic trick of making the previous one look old and crap literally overnight, if you'd just spoffed on the previous gen and 2 months later this came out you'd be a very sad man. I wonder if as the last, and most finely honed and refined generation of ICE cars these won’t end up as £15k bombsite dealer smokers like the last one has?

Only car I can think of that so comprehensively made the previous model look so utterly crap and undesirable was the L491 Range Rover Sport which instantly made the original L320 model look like tired council estate fodder, even if it was a 3 month old example.

Had mine for over 2.5 years and have no desire to sell, even though the depreciation has been something like £1500 a month over that period of time.

They're a huge leap on from the previous version and makes daily driving much less of a chore.

Straight on the lottery win list. The restomod Porsche from the weekend plus one of these as a two car garage for me would be complete until EV dominance.

That's what it's all about isn't it.

£1,500 a month seems very reasonable when people pay £600+ a month to be able to do 500 miles in some godawful transverse engine biscuit tin with vinyl seats, a Mercedes badge on the nose, and a tiny Renault diesel engine under the bonnet.

Very much so, not that I would say crap, just dated it very comprehensively. I imagine the older model and the Spur in a lot of cases is quite a hard sell, they seem to have gone sub 10k asking prices so I bet in the trade they are half that in some cases, sort of history repeating itself for old Bentleys.

This however is lovely and still has all its gravitas, the old one is still a nice car but is in that limbo between old and classic, and will be for a while yet.

Was talking to a chap that had the older Conti and got a Jag XJ (351) recently and he prefers the Jag he said. Will never forget when they first came out seeing one being hoofed between Wilmslow and Alderley edge on the A34, it left an impression, a hole in the air and a smell of burnt matches.

I absolutely love these, I just hope by the time I can afford one that they're not as dated / undesirable as the old one

Purple and tan is precisely the colour choice I'd have. This is one of the best examples I've seen and even the wheels are the spec I'd have had... *sighs

The rotating display doesn't seem to align on this one...

Otherwise, it's bloody wonderful!

I prefer them with a bit less bling on the front, but other than that. Fabulous machine.

There's one of them near me in that colour and it's stunning. I have to stop and gawp at it every time I see it.

It's the rich man's XKR. Just look at the rear wing. And I'm old school; I love all the chrome accents.

I think people are being a bit unkind about the last gen GT.

In my opinion the V8S is a fine looking car that I'd be very happy to own.

There are cheaper ones available too.

To be fair, that is very nice and good value for money.
I think part of the problem is, that the older model has now developed that under £20k reputation where they're just expensive old dogs past their use-by-date. Given the model has been around for 2 decades, you naturally think of those earlier cars.

You know Pistonheads, iso keeping writing about:

‘The end is nigh…’

‘You don’t know what you had till it’s gone…’

‘We will never see the like of it again…’

Blah…

Why don’t you get out there and advocate for the thing that provided you with the content for this site?

You know - ‘bat for the home team?!’

(I can do without the usual ‘wit’ from the usual posters about: ‘Progress’ and ‘Move with the times’ and how EV’s are literally going to ‘save motoring’… blah also, so save the thumb movements there, you know who you are of course…!)

This car is at least 5y old, and possibly getting close to 6, and is priced at 66% of its price new without being particularly unique or "collectable"

Okay...............

PS its lovely BTW

Having progressed, over the last few years, from 4.3 to 5.0 to 5.5 n/a V8s, the next one I'm planning is a 5.0 s/c V8.

20 years of V8s this year, can't see any reason not to make it 25.
