As the saying goes - if you give a monkey a type writer they will eventually give you shakespeare!

I really do think there should be a limit on the amount of times you can try to pass your driving test, both practical and theoretical parts.

What do we think the chances of someone whos hazard perception is this bad, being able to pass the actual driving test?

My thoughts exactly. They will surely never pass a test.

I remember the daughter of one of the cleaning staff at worked had failed it six times, she asked for advice for her daughter who came in with her one day and I had a chat, I brought my Hazard Perception/questions CD and a copy of the Highway Code that I had used to prepare for a bike test I never took and gave them to her, with some advice as I had got 100 percent after doing a couple of hours revision and 90 percent on the HP as good at video games.

Anyway, next time I saw her, she had a face like thunder, her mum said "She failed again", I asked whether the stuff I gave her was any help, apparently not as they were still in her mums car where she left them.

No further assistance was offered, two month or more had elapsed and just kept turning up and mashing buttons, some folk are just not cut out for it, she wasn't exactly learning disabled, mainly just a bit thick and a lot lazy. The seventh attempt actually got her a lower score than the sixth ffs.

I told my three I would pay for one attempt and any materials they may need, if they fail they got to pay for the subsequent ones and that focused them a bit, its so easy if you read the highway code, do a few practices, take your time and read the questions properly.

60 attempts, can only be some learning issues, surely ?

While this must be an outlier it does somewhat suggest there ought to be some sort of limit to how many times you can take a test like this.

What would happen if she had to retake the test in 5 years?

I've seen people saying that it's hard and that the questions are formulated strangely to catch you out, etc. The questions are exactly the same as the practice ones you can find online, and all the info is quite literally in one book to buy/borrow. It's insane that people struggle with it.

The Guardian article is an ad for the AA App....and probably a total fabrication.

Judging by the decline in driving standards over the last few years I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest.

It must be a learning difficulty or something to fail that many times. If it's a matter of intelligence then once the number of fails hits double figures, I'd be seriously concerned that they're just not capable. At the end of the day, this person will be driving around in a 2 tonne box of metal. It will kill people in the wrong hands. But hey, if the test says they're good enough then they're good enough.

Some people are really bad at tests. Both practical and theory. My wife took 7 attempts to pass practical but she's only scraped the car twice in the whole time we've been married. Both times on the same gate post within a couple of weeks. For the other 100,000 miles she's been fine and has full NCB. Couldn't pass the test because of nerves about the test itself.

As others have said, you would expect something else being at play.

It does seem bonkers though that you can keep going until you eventually get it.

I took my driving test over 50 years ago, so I thought I'd have a bash at a trial online theory test, without any swotting up on the current Highway Code first. The only questions I failed on were about a "Puffin" crossing (wtf?) and the speed limit for a particular class of vehicle while towing a trailer (if I ever need to drive one, I'll find out).
The bulk of it was common sense really, and if someone who is preparing for the test can't manage a pass after 50 attempts it does sound as though they are not really cut out for driving.

Probably explains why so many people are trying to get someone else to take the test for them. Frankly, I’d rather have someone on the road who has failed 60 times before actually passing, than someone who paid a ‘friend’ to take the theory and practical test for them.
