290hp Mini JCW Challenge for sale

Mad manual Minis are no more - this one ought to be a fine testament to the fallen

Though it shouldn’t be, the Mini JCW Challenge is easily forgotten about. This most recent F56 era of Cooper S has never really captured the imagination like the first two 21st century Minis, inevitably more mature yet inexplicably less stylish as well. Those who are concerned with the fast ones will probably recall the GP first, remember that it was auto-only and a tad underwhelming for a 300hp Mini, then not think about 2.0-litre Coopers for a while.

Launched back in 2016, the Challenge really deserves some recognition. Especially with the GP not quite delivering on the promise, plus the demise of the manual in Minis recently announced. It was as good as the F56 got, and it was actually very good indeed. Modifications to this particular example should make it even better still.

As standard, the Challenge benefitted from a host of upgrades to the suspension, brakes and exhaust. They were from the same suppliers that provided parts for the Mini Challenge race cars, including Nitron dampers, Mintex brakes, Quaife limited-slip diff and Team Dynamics wheels. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres were standard fit, and a really silly exhaust was also included.

The Challenge was a hoot, pointy and willing where a JCW was remarkably plain for a hot Mini. Yet buyers weren’t that interested at £32,000, and so just 53 were sold here when the original plan was for 100. When the GP came, the UK received 575 of the 2,000-unit production run, at £34,995. It’s easy to imagine much more excitement around a motorsport-inspired Mini now, with the end of such hot hatches nigh.

So it’s already interesting and rare, but this Challenge also benefits from around £4k’s worth of mods from Mini specialists Lohen for around 290hp. That includes an ECU remap, upgraded intercooler, new panel filter, braided lines and Eibach anti-roll bar, all of which should make it even more fun to drive. It’s being sold with the original parts as well, plus more road-biased Michelins, and a full Mini service history. It’s surely got to be one of the best examples of this forgotten pocket rocket.

When we last wrote about a Challenge four years ago, it was number six; with 16,000 miles, it was for sale at £25,980. Now number 40 is on offer, with 16,000 miles, for sale at £25,950. Incredible. They seem to be retaining their money pretty well, then, while still coming in at thousands less than a GP. It’s not very much more than an old GP2, in fact, which might be a fun comparison to carry out. As Minis like this and the GPs become part of the JCW past rather than its future, so they arguably look more appealing than ever.

I'm not generally a huge fan of the F56 but, while it's obviously not cheap (and I'm sure could be replicated for less money), in that colour, on those wheels, with the ride height etc, that looks great, and I bet it would be a lot of fun to drive.

Although expensive, it looks the part and I bet it'll be a hoot to drive on a decent B road. Whether you'd get the same hoot from something cheaper in the range is open to debate!

I have always liked these, and I really enjoyed the 3.5 years I spent in my old manual F56 Cooper S too. I'd love a go in this with all the improvements/enhancements for sure. driving

As said, I also like the colour scheme with this one.

Yep, that certainly looks like it would be fun. Good era for Mini and a manual just adds an extra sprinkle of “want” for sure smile

It's wild that during COVID these were moving for £15-£18k depending on mileage. They were a bit of an unknown and the additional parts created an issue warranty, so they floated around until they started landing in the hands of enthusiasts.

JCW GP is one of my dream cars. I jist can't see how a 300hp Mini, auto or not, can be described as boring. I remember tests saying it was a bit of an unruly hooligan?

Even though the author kind of slagged it off in this review, I've got to say I absolutely love my JCW F56 so far. Even with "only" 230 bhp it feels rapid and is great fun to drive. Mine also comes with the JCW PRO exhaust which is certainly raucous (in a good way). Mine only set me back £12k which, if I so wished, is plenty of change over this to get an LSD and stage 1 remap up to about 300 bhp.

So far I'm a big fan of these F56s and I came from an R53 with 200 bhp which was great don't get me wrong but personally I wouldn't swap it for mine. smile

From what I've read from owners on the F56 group, they are anything but boring. They are by all accounts an utter handful, and truly bonkers in a straight line, and pretty damn handy in the corners too if you can manage to put the power down.

And that's why I want one so much!!

I feel the same. I'd like to try the 300bhp auto GP don't get me wrong, but the manual gearbox and the differences on this model really make it I think.

A small(ish) car like this needs 3 pedals for me.

As nuts as the GP is, I'm yet to read any comparison between the manual and auto that prefers the auto, at least from a driving perspective. I certainly don't regret my choice of a manual JCW, and with production of the manuals ending, it might yet prove a better buy than I fully appreciated at the time. Also, even after stuff like MX5s, I think the Minis have a sweet shift, and I really like the rev matching too.

I notice they now have a "1to6" special edition which is best part of £40k and all it is, is a specced up manual JCW, so you can already see how manuals are going to be more sought after going forward, not just in Mini circles, but with many other cars too.

I'd much rather have the auto for my usage. Doubt I'll ever afford one so it's a moot point anyway. Properly quick mini with an auto box and paddles option and a stupid, juvenile body kit...what's not to like!!

To be fair, those who have the autos seem to love them too, and they obviously chose it for a reason. I wouldn't diss anyone who prefers one. I will probably be that person one day hehe
