Insurance claim advice
Discussion
Hi all,
Just after a bit of advice on an insurance claim and I'll try to keep it as simple/brief as possible:
I have a 2005 BMW 330i, high miles but looking on the Autotrader and seeing the prices they're being sold/listed for makes me think they're holding value.
My insurer has offered quite a lot less compared to the prices I've seen on sale listings. Also offering about £1k lower than the estimated value when taking out the insurance policy (September 2023).
Never really gone through this process before so any advice would be greatly appreciated on getting a better value for my car.

Been there, done that!
My 2005 122K mile 330i SE got tapped in the rear on a Motorway slip-road earlier this year.
The insurer of the car that hit me admitted liability. I went to one of their "recommended" repairers who came up with an estimate of just over £2K when all it needed was a bumper cover because of barely visible cracks like this (that BMW sold for about £650 in primer) .

They decided it was a Cat N a couple of weeks before they bothered to tell me and offered an insulting amount that I managed to get increased by a couple of hundred quid.
I reluctantly accepted the revised figure because I just couldn't find any adverts for manual SEs, only Sports that were about £1,000 dearer.
Good luck!

All you can do is gather as much evidence as you can and dig in for a fight.
Is there a way of seeing data from sold and removed ads on AT, to give a wider field? I know JayEmm was using some sort of price tracker in a recent video about Porsche prices but that may only work for live ads.

I've never really understood why this isn't as simple as "there are no equivalent models for sale for the price you have offered <insert screenshot of autotrader here>"
Aren't they obliged to get you back into the pre-accident position you were in?
Absolutely they are - all this crap about CAP values etc, one of the founding principles of insurance is to return you to the financial position you were in immediately prior to the accident. My previous insurer soon backed down when i stood my ground and threatened to take them to court without waiting 12 months + for the OmbudsmanAren't they obliged to get you back into the pre-accident position you were in?
Thanks for the responses all. I'll give em a call see how things go from there. I have several ad examples from Autotrader. Will keep in mind the ombudsman option
As mentioned above, and in their own words too, the idea is to get me back to the pre-accident position. Their offer wouldn't leave me with enough if I wanted to go down that route and replace like for like.

I've done this many times - ask to speak / email the assessor directly
Send in ads of comparable cars
Personally I take the pi$$ out of them - so they can't wait to get rid of me
IE when they say they'll give you £2k, I say if you can get a comparable car for that, I'll give you £20k, go buy me 10 !

None - I sort out friends and family claimsSomeone drove into my Mum's fence (again) the other day that's ongoing
Sorted out a mate's in the summer, got the Cat N removed, the car fixed with no excess, additional work done for free, a hire car and £300 compensation for messing her about
I got lucky in 2009, I had put my gtv into the top of a wall, bent it a bit.
Insurance engineer/assessor rang me, didn't offer much, he was getting his replacement info from ebay/AT adverts, I had seen every one of them and could point out why they were not as good as mine WAS.
Ended up I got more than I had paid, car was not categorised and I got to keep it.
