Car went in for a 'full service' with 'full vehicle check' yesterday.

What would you expect this to cover?

My expectations are:

Oil & filter change
Pollen filter change
Air filter change
Possibly spark plugs?

What would you expect?

Would depend on mileage/age and service schedule.

Exactly that. Timing belt as necessary. Brake fluid, transmission oils etc etc, all when scheduled. There's no 'one size fits all'.

If its a main dealer then whatever is on the schedule for a major service.

If its an independent - oil & filter and air filter.

What did you get?

You'll be lucky! Most 'full services' consist of (cheap )oil and filter change and these days a video of the underside.

Why not ask the garage? If you paid £100, not a lot, if you paid £1000 I would expect most things done.

Same less the spark plugs if it was a garage talking.

Bit of misnomer though.

A full service in theory should include all fluids, filters and plugs but in reality you'd never really do all that at the same time unless you were doing some restoration or recommissioning.

I think at a Ford main dealership it’s

Health Check
Replace Oil filter and Oil
Replace Air and Pollen filters

For a BMW, a 'full service' could be:
  • oil service of oil & filter
  • Insp1 with air filter / microfilter & valve clearances (on top of items in oil service)
  • Insp2 with additional plugs, gearbox & diff oil changes (on top of items in Insp1)
Anywhere from £100-£1200!

I got a "free" vehicle health check which included a two page checklist of various items, tyres, brakes etc.

How long is a piece of string?. Pretty much everyone else has covered it - What does the manufacturers schedule state, what is actually due time / mileage wise & what does this repairing garage complete if it's a fixed price menu service type of thing...

VW (I'm sure others) so a minor / major alternating every 10k, 15k or 20k miles depending on mysterious factors I don't quite understand.

Minor is Oil, Filter inspection.
Major is Oil, Filter, Plugs or Diesel Filter, cabin filter, inspection.

It's usually completely at odds with the service guides that say plugs are 60k miles, cabin filter is 30k miles or whatever.

Obvs, they always come with a load of advisory things like £100 wipers, £200 aircon service, £300 brake fluid change, £200 coolant change etc.

A full service is a basic service that they say includes more things but you end up paying for. Even though you've paid more for the full service to start with.

We had a "service Plan" with VW , after one service "need a gearbox oil change sir" but we have a service plan , sorry sir , not included .
Later on at another service , need an Haldex oil change sir , but we have a service plan , sorry not included , the service carried out - kick the tyres ( changed pressures to incorrect values ) change engine oil , take a video , many items in service schedule book "not included "
Not sure what I paid for in the end !

Whatever the service schedule asks for, and that would be clear upon dropping my vehicle off.
