I haven't had the need to insure my car for over a year. I've got at least 7 years NCB. Someone told me that this gets wiped out if you don't keep your car insured. Is this correct?

Yes, it needs to be continuous.

IIRC, most insurers will allow up to a 2 year gap. Each insurer will have their own rules though.

After 2 or 3 years (depends on the company you are insuring with next) it will in theory no longer be valid.

It’s then up to each company how they handle it.

Some will reduce a year from a particular maximum for each year it’s out of date. Others may not accept any.

Can't recall if they still send evidence of no claims on canceling a policy within 14 days?

Could possibly keep his no claims alive cheaply, but not certain.

My experience is that many insurers will accept NCD as long as the gap has not been over 2 years.
