Good evening.

I need your help and accurate help please as this is important.

We purchased a brand-new car in 2018. I paid a deposit of 10% in January 2018 and picked up the car on 7/3/2018. However, the car had been taxed and registered the day before in readiness for us to pick it up. So we picked up the brand new car (not pre-reg) on 9/3/2018 and paid the remaining 90% on the day.

In summary - the deposit paid via bank transfer in January 2018 - The car was collected by us on 9/3/18 and the outstanding amount paid in full. The V5/logbook was in my name/address dated 6/3/18.

Therefore for the purposes of official ownership - what is the date I owned the car?

The date is important as I am making a claim on this car and the ownership date is important.

Many thanks in advance

The V5 is not proof of ownership.

So whatever date is on the paperwork you got when you bought the car, or the date on the receipt when you bought the car is what to go off.

Which day did you actually collect the car - two dates in your post...
assuming that the second is accurate and that is when you paid the remainder, then that will be when title passed to you - you should have paperwork reflecting the full payment having been made on the 9th of March 2018 and that will be the date you own it - a deposit doesn't count in terms of ownership

so 09-03-2018

Thank you all

Sorry got dates mixed up - it was the day after when the name went on the V5 - we had paid the 10% deposit about a month before.

This is for the 'diesel claims' forms exact date of ownership.

As I said, the car is not pre-reg and we are the only owners on it but did not pick the car up until the day after it was taxed and our name went on the V5. We paid the outstanding amount the day after and got the keys/car

No offence to the op here, but the plethora of 'urgent help/advice needed' posts from new accounts over the last couple of days all seem to read, well, robotically.

Or is it just me?

Anybody with a new account whose first post/thread is asking advice about claiming compensation should be barred from the site for life...
