Bit of a random one but saw a Renault Clio Estate parked up which got me thinking. What’s the purpose of these estates based on small hatchbacks?

Surely if you wanted more space you’d go for a medium sized hatchback like a Megane. I assume they don’t make them anymore but just wondered if anyone ever purchased one and why you’d opt for one over a regular hatchback?

Why get a Megane when you can buy a Scenic, or a transit?

If you needed more space you'd get a 7.5 ton box truck?

Mostly replaced now with small SUV hatchbacks like Captur, Kamiq, Arona.

Or for a medium sized dog. Easier to get into than an SUV, more room for the dog than a hatch, rest of the car is appropriately sized for the use-case?

I suppose if you had a pet it would make sense but for a manufacturer I don’t think it makes much sense to produce such a vehicle.

I suppose the lack of availability these days (and the nations love of SUVs/crossover cars makes them a non starter) at the moment

I had a skoda Fabia estate with the 1.9 pd engine. As a single guy, it had the perfect amount of space for camping and my mountain bike, the mapped 1.9 gave it enough go.
I think the estate was better looking than the hatch also. One of my favourite cars.

Oddly the 2005 Clio estate had a bigger boot than the contemporary Megane estate; a very useful 440lt in a car that was only 4.2m x 1.7m. The Megane was a dose bigger in all directions, so there's certain a use-case (hard to believe in an age of "I street park in terraced row but I'm having a Q7" - but quite a lot of people apply that sort of rational rationale.)

Didn't Seat also do an Ibiza estate / ST?

Is this also about the one (and only) sector that Audi haven't got a current model for...? An Audi A1 estate on the way....

A Clio estate has a bigger boot than a Mégane hatchback, longer load bay too. I have a Dacia Logan MCV, basically a Sandero estate. The boot is absolutely huge, far bigger than the class above. Boot space over cabin space was more important to me, plus it's lighter than cars from the class above which brings it's own benefits.

I had a mk1 Fabia vRS. Whilst the hatch was no looker, the estate always looked to me like a slug in side profile.

Many lose any sense of style. The Yaris Verso always looked tall and really ungainly though the Citroen C4 Picasso with it's MPV approach looked better.

My son has a Clio estate. It's his first car passed down from his Grandma.
Very cheap insurance as he's possibly the only teenager ever to have a Clio estate!
Lollops along nicely though with 100bhp from a low pressure turbo 1.2.
It's the same wheelbase as the hatchback, but 18cm longer in the boot.

I think the Mini Clubman might be the last surviving supermini estate, and that's not long for this world with the new models coming.

Our 2012 Ibiza estate - small car, easy to drive, cheap to run - but a boot bigger than a Leon hatch.

Ibiza - 266lt
Ibiza estate - 430lt
Leon - 380lt

Yes.

I am a big fan of small estates - owned a Polo 'breadvan' 2-door, a Seat Cordoba estate and now the Ibiza estate ('ST').

I agree - I used to have an Octavia (MK1) estate, and the proportions of Fabia estate always looked odd by comparison.
