Nissan unveils 435hp Ariya NISMO in Tokyo

There's previous as far as NISMO SUVs are concerned - now it's embracing electric

Remember the Juke NISMO? Hard to forget when Nissan tried to make a hot hatch of its small SUV. Looks remarkably prescient now, though (see Puma ST and Kona N) and the later RS was kind of entertaining. Now Nissan has affixed its most famous badge to the back of its new electric SUV - welcome the Ariya NISMO.

If this perhaps looks a tad modest for a NISMO, that rather seems the point: Nissan suggests that the Ariya offers ‘powerful acceleration, a spacious upgraded cabin and the quiet operation unique to electric vehicles.’ Thrilling, right? That said, there is up to 435hp and 442lb available (two variants have been launched), plus a NISMO drive mode that ‘maximises responses’ and introduces a soundtrack inspired by Formula E.

It’s said that every single chassis component has been given the NISMO treatment, which is encouraging, along with a rework of the e-4ORCE AWD; new ‘highly rigid’ 20-inch wheels are also standard fit. They don’t look like Rays just yet, though any reduction in unsprung mass would surely be useful. Turn in and stability are said to benefit. Elsewhere, the details are a little vague for the moment, though improved aero is promised. The mild bodykit should increase downforce but reduce drag, which will be handy in terms of range as much as anything. The most notable feature inside are a pair of NISMO seats.

So the Ariya doesn’t look to be doing loads for the reputation of modern NISMO, but then that’s probably more the job of the Z equivalent; this will likely join the ranks of similarly-specced, vaguely sporty SUVs. The Nissan isn’t the first, and certainly won’t be the last. You never know, it may even end up - like that Juke RS - being kind of fun in the end. Expect confirmation of UK sales later in 2024.

Nissan are great at diluting the Nismo brand aren't they?

This doesn't seem to be sporting at all!

Needs lowering, removal of weight, and more performance.

This makes the Hyundai Ionic 5N look like a go-cart in comparison

I'm glad the wheels are "highly rigid". So many cars these days have flubbery wheels...
The rest of the car looks like a hippo, especially in that colour

You just got to think of this like all the BMW's and Merc's with M/AMG badges....i.e. not a real Nismo.

Just like BMW have for years.

Hyundai have been on the phone. They want their tins of Blue paint back.

I've got a 'regular' 306PS Ariya e-4ORCE AWD and its a brilliant well made family and daily driver with plenty of poke (0-60 mid 5's) and on salary sacrifice is very cost effective.

BUT she is a big old unit, and I honestly cannot see how the Ariya is a good platform for anything performance orientated.

If I wanted something with even more performance (unlikely) in the future I'd be looking at the Koreans, the new Ioniq 5 has more than 220bhp more than this 'Nismo'

It feels like semi skimmed milk to me.

Nismo, M, RS & GR SUV's are an oxymoron. Like those that drive them.

I'd still have this as a family car... an SUV both me and the wife could agree on (she won't entertain estates unfortunately)

Strange to do the same colours as Hyundai though, seriously thought this was an N product before clicking on it!

Why? Some people only need one car, and they would like it to cover as many bases as possible.

Toyota GR models, Ford Raptors and the like are completely different though because they have greater off-road capabilities than the regular models. Something like an X5 M is a stupid vehicle in comparison (not as good as a saloon / estate on road, not a capable or practical 4x4 either).
