How does this work then?

We currently have a 2008, on a 24 month lease, 10k pa.

I happened to notice today that we are currently at 8.5k, and only on month seven of year one. Thought to myself.. hmm we will be well over, better do something about that…

This evening, got home and checked out post box, which we don’t do every day., and there was a letter in there from our lease co, dated 15th Jan.

Letter saying that according to their records, the estimated mileage of the lease car is 8,532 miles, and drawing our attention to the knock on of being over the agree mileage limit.

Letter is below

So, how the bloody hell do they know that, and it must be pretty live tracking as the mileage is within 32 miles or so.

Car hasn’t been in for a service or any work.

Anyone know the answer, or received similar?

Am now off to buff my tin foil hat!

Cheers all

Looks like your car has a telematics tracker installed, so the lease company can see all sorts of data in real time. I understand it's quite common in commercial fleets.

It’s either-

1. Telematics
2. Witchcraft

Leasys tend to use no.1

Have you actually looked at the corporate website for the lease company.

How much easier things were when you could just slip the speedo cable off for a month or two.

So i'm told.

Be interesting to see how this one develops.
Hope you haven’t got ‘pack3’ from the website above!

Nope, never have tbh.

It is a personal lease (our third, but first with this company), never had any mileage awareness letters prior to this one...

What is the excess mileage charge pm on this contract, and other awkward questions you’re probably not going to answer…

If they haven't warned you in advance that they have the ability to track the car that feels very wrong.

Blame the folk carrying out mileage ‘corrections’ for this big brother stuff.

It’s probably buried in the document pack somewhere. Am going to have a browse in a mo.

Feels very invasive, even though I likely have unwittingly agreed to it laugh

ETA: our lease deal is through nationwide vehicle contracts.

ETA also to add, found the relevant part in the contract

Pic below..

I am surprise../

Is it a Mercedes? I know my Mercedes Me thing seems to let the company know its mileage, and I get an email inviting me to make a service booking.

I’d have thought if they were fitting a tracker/telemetry of some kind you’d need to have agreed to it (buried in a terms and conditions).

This - I got a similar letter for a 3008 that my wife uses.
She used to walk to work (nearby school) but now has to commute 35m each day.
The milage is wildly higher than we thought, but the lease was for 10k pa.

Lease started in mid Jan 2023, and in Dec 23 they sent a letter saying that we were at 11k + bits.
I am sure that the number was close to the actual milage.
No mention of revised contract milage, as it was prob within some tolerance level.

It'll be the least of your issues when you come to hand it back....Free2Move (well, more accurately Mannheim as their collection agents in the first instance) are known fraudsters when it comes to return charges. On a 12 month least during which we covered 4k miles, we were accused of all sorts of damage and having the car partially resprayed. They tried to get £800 out of us on another wise immaculate 'as new' Citroen C4. It took the Financial Ombudsman involvement and 10 months to get this sorted.

Be wary.
