Petrol/Diesels and EV's. Car tax (VED) income and damage
Discussion
Had a slight thought provoking conversation last night on what and where does our money, ( from our car tax . 3 cars) go. I dont really know. It all goes to the Gov and then a % goes back into road repairs/infrastructure etc etc. Doesnt it. Probably other places as well. BUT now that a larger % of the vehicles on the road are EV's and they dont pay tax...wheres the extra money going to come from.....Also with EV's being heavier. Do they do more damage to the roads than ICE cars do?
To be pedantic:
- EVs (as in Electric Vehicles) aren’t eligible for zero rate VED, only ZEVs (Zero Emission Vehicles). Potato Potahto you might say, but there are corner cases where that distinction matters
- From 2025, ZEVs registered after 1st March 2017 will pay the lowest chargeable band of VED anyway
- Impact of vehicle weight on road wear is weight to the fourth power. So a 2 tonne vehicle will cause 16x more wear than a 1 tonne vehicle (2x2x2x2 vs 1x1x1x1). However, a 13 tonne bus will cause 13x13x13x13= 28,561. Which is to say one bus is equivalent to nearly 1800 2 tonne vehicles. The slightly higher weight of most EVs is basically a drop in the ocean compared to the big stuff.

Short answer no, SUVs are a bigger culprit. Also the torque control precision of an electric motor with a highly sophisticated drivability calibration does far less damage than someone with a sub 100 IQ trying to pull away with a clutch D4rez said:

tMost SUVs are autos, so come with torque converters. And as described above, add so very little to road wear compared with buses, lorries etc.
My FWD EV wheelspins out of every junction. Utterly useless traction control. Impossible to pull away cleanly.
