So bit of a long one.

Mechanic was supposed to be working in my car. Took it to MOT center where it apparently died. They took it apart, couldn't find any issue and told me to use their mate to recover it. Mate was insanely expensive and cash only. Tried to recover it but found out left it at MOT center which is nothing to do with them and didn't tell me.

Said if I let them know when Ive booked the recovery for they will put car back together and leave keys at MOT center.

Mot center said nothing to do with them.

No idea where my car is. Mot is now expired and tax won't renew without it. Mechanic won't reply and still has keys.

I don't want it towed for not being taxed and mot'd but have no idea where it even is.

Do I report it stolen? I've looked on trace and nothing comes up as been towed but if they crushed it would that show up?

How do I find it or recover it with no keys!?

I have no idea what you are trying to explain.

Eta: Someone took your car for an MOT, but something went bang at the MOT place and they took it apart? They then suggested a cash only recovery firm who have taken your car somewhere? Nobody is answering the phone and/or denying all responsibility?

If the above is correct and as you say there is no money owing, it's theft.

Jesus, what a nightmare!

How long since your last message from the mechanic?

Depending on the above if it’s more than a day or so I’d be tempted to report stolen

I’d message the guy that you are going to report it stolen with him named to the cops. If you don’t hear back in a day do it.

Needs to be written out again.
‘They’ is used several times. That needs to be replaced with precisely who in each case.

Hard to tell from the OP but if it hasn't been recovered surely it's still at the MOT centre.

Is there any evidence that an MOT was attempted? A failed test?

Are the MOT center away they've even seen it?

Sounds like you've be scammed...

UPDATE

It has been taxed, mot'd (when mechanic said it couldn't be) and new log book issued. None of which are anything to do with me!!

Have reported it stolen.

Best of luck.

Why not let us all have the make, model, colour, area and reg so we can keep a look out?

yikes

Not good. Insurance may be awkward given that you handed over the keys...

Everybody hands over their keys when it’s being serviced / repaired. How else would they move it?

New log book issued? Why!? How?! You didn’t mean log book did you?

I bet he did.

There was someone on here with a TVR and Aston that had something like this happen. New V5c issued and they knew nothing about it.

Takes days for the DVLA to issue a new log book and notify the previous owner. Is this an online service now? I wonder how you found out so quickly. Perhaps your vehicle was used to clone another.

Once you voluntarily hand over keys, it's likely not covered by your insurance.
My policy : exceptions include...

Not dissimilar to theft by someone posing as a buyer, which is also often specifically excluded.
