One-of-50 RHD BMW M3 GT for sale

Homologation special status? Check. Recently restored? Check. British Racing Green kudos? You betcha

BMW doesn’t go about GT racing like the others. Anyone who’s seen one of the old Z4 GT3s in action will know that it rumbles in a way that none of the road cars do, and that’s because BMW skirted the production-focused regs by swapping in a race-tuned version of the S65 V8 from the E92 M3. A decade prior, it cobbled together the mythical E46 M3 GTR by stuffing a flat-plane crank racing V8 into the space where an S54 straight-six would normally sit, just so that it could get its definitely-not-a-prototype racer past the scrutineers. That’s how far BMW is willing to go to get a leg up on the competition.

Annoyingly for us, we never got a road-going Z4 V8, and while a handful of M3 GTR Strassenversions did make it to the production phase, most (if not all of them) are locked up in BMW vaults across the globe, only appearing at certain events and celebrations. That wasn’t the case when it came to prepping the E36 for competition, as BMW developed a near-endless supply of homologation specials so that the M3 could be entered into any and all endurance series across the globe. That included the M3-R, specially prepped for GT racing in Australia, the GTR, which granted it access to the ADAC GT Cup in Germany, and the uber cool M3 Lightweight for racing in America.

Mainland Europe, meanwhile, received the GT, which allowed BMW to take the E36 racing in the FIA GT championship and America’s IMSA series. Changes over the regular M3 were subtle, with the GT using the same S50B30 3.0-litre straight-six as the rest of the European line-up. Tweaks included six individual throttle bodies, a motorsport-grade dual pick-up oil pan, new oil pumps and the newly-developed VANOS camshaft control system, upping power to 295hp - nearly 10 horses more than the base car. It was also 30-odd kilos lighter with extra bracing and a firmer front suspension set-up.

The car you see here is a bit different, however. Alongside the 306 left-hand drive-only cars sold on the continent, 50 right hookers were sent across the channel for us Brits to enjoy. Annoyingly, these cars weren’t a perfect match to the Euro-grade GTs, doing away with the engine upgrades and, therefore, ‘officially’ put out the same 286hp output as the base M3. Not a huge injustice, frankly, and this forum topic suggests our M3 GTs were a bit more potent than BMW claimed. Besides, UK GTs still received the same chassis upgrades as the Euro cars, as well as the adjustable front splitter, taller rear wing and lighter aluminium doors. All cars were finished in British Racing Green, too, with stunning part-green leather, part suede seats and BMW Motorsport badging.

UK-spec or not, the M3 GT is arguably the coolest E36 we got in Britain. This one’s extra special, as the seller says it’s been subjected to a ‘full nut and bolt restoration’ over eight years. Thankfully, the alleged £40,000 bill was handled by the previous owner, and the car’s travelled just 100 miles since work was complete. This has to be the closest thing to a showroom-grade M3 GT out there, surely?

Not that there are many out there in the first place, and it’ll come as no surprise that it’s the only one currently listed on PH. There’s a price, too. How does £79,995 sound? Expensive by E36 standards, but then again you’re looking at one of the rarest - and arguably most important - editions of BMW's overlook M3. If you’d rather an E36 track special that won’t make you wince after collecting a few stone chips on a track day, then maybe get yourself registered to bid on this mighty Clubsport-inspired 328i.

I can't quite put my finger on why, but I definitely go weak at the knees when it comes to the E36 M3. cool

Regardless of the resteration costs etc, what on earth makes this car, as glorious as it is, worth £80k outside of nostalgia?

It's lovely, don't get me wrong. Just seems insane. Think Cardle made me grumpy this morning biglaugh

It’s better at the knees than at the rear subframe! (I know different model but it’s best I got at this time)

Definitely for someone who must have this particular model as that price is crazy. E36 m3s still look the business, though

I had the pleasure of some very quick passenger laps at Spa in Steve Rance's M3 GT, in about 2005. It was impressive given it was stock and M brakes of that era are a little small.
Actually I think it was his wifes car. 😁

A great car no doubt and a nicely done restoration.
However no mention of the actual mileage - certainly not ‘100’…
It’s not just expensive by E36 standards. I suppose there is someone out there who will pay the same money for this as a genuine E30 M3 or an E46 CSL, but I just don’t get it.
There’s not enough about the model to warrant exceptional status.

I'm the opposite - love the e30 before it and the e46 afterwards - but these just don't do it for me in the same way, nice as they are.

It just looks plain to me. I really don’t understand why people think BMW make or rather made good looking cars. Bland in the extreme to my eyes.

I think I recall correctly Jethro Bovingdon turning one of these into a modded track car years ago when they were worth buttons.

That's bloody lovely, my favourite M3.
Just such a great design.

You definitely won't be alone with that view either I reckon. I think that I just like to champion the underdog if you know what I mean though.

I also preferred driving the E36 M3 to the E46 M3 as well, but I wouldn't mind a go in the E30 M3 to see if it lives up to all the hype though.

I saw the current M5 the other day out of the road, and I said to my missus that I really liked that it looked so plain/bland. I said to her that you'd never know that it had over 600bhp under the bonnet, because it basically just looks like a 520d to me, and they have a real Q car vibe about them I think.

I do love the older models, particularly the interior, what a thing. Even like the wheel design on this.

Nah! Just because someone spends £60 odd thousand on a restoration doesn't make the car worth £80k! Just watch " bangers & cash" and see what happens in the real world. You're lucky to get 60% back on what you spent. More fool the mug in his rose tinted glasses who chucks that sort of money at an old beemer. IMHO of course!

You are right. He was targeting an 8 minute ring time. Don’t think he managed it but as you say the original car I recall was less than £10k.

Yes, these slipped under the radar for years. I used to keep an eye out for them in the classifieds. They were barely worth more than the regular Evo version. I think the BRG colour was a bit underwhelming, so didn’t really attract the full range of M3 buyers.

Had our ‘ordinary’ m3 evo for 11 years and whilst it has thrown up some expensive bills, we still enjoy every drive. Pulled over to do a pic when it just turned 100k

Love these. Nearly bought one years ago, but thought they were very expensive at the time (£12k) compare to the standard EVO. More reason to just do it at the time!

Nice car and would be worth that had they been the same as the LHD models.
Essentially paying a huge premium for colour spoiler and trim.
Love the E36 M3's owned a fair few, but definitely would be buying the m3 Evo as was a better car.

Reminds me of mine, which I bought new in ‘97. Px’d a 911 3.2 Sport Coupe, one of my many regrettable financial decisions!

Mine was cosmos black with Modena Natur hide.

P711 FDP still alive and MoTd when I checked.
