I have bought a vehicle that has a private reg on it, the previous owner didn't want to keep it as i was vehicle-less i was happy to take it and sort the reg later. Now that i have the V5C i want to remove the private reg and revert to the original number plate of the vehicle. The DVLA website and all forums i can find push you towards putting the private reg on retention to remove it and paying the £80 fee. However, i dont want to retain it or sell it or do anything other than bin it! Therefore, does anyone know how i can remove the reg without retaining it? Is such a thing possible?

I thought it would be straight forward, but appears not to be the case! I just want to remove it, relinquish any rights to it, and to be allowed to put the original reg back on!

Yep, let us know what the reg is and someone might be happy to take it on for the sake of £80.

Send the signed V5 to DVLA with an accompanying signed letter clearly stating you would like the currant registration removed and not retained and the original or a date related registration issued. There is no fee required for this.

Thank you all, its in the format AB12 CDE and it doesnt spell or make any sense, its just him and his families first initials (5 of them). The reason I'm taking it off as it makes the vehicle look older than it is by a few years and i'd prefer to have the original plate. I don't want the faff of selling it or retaining and getting refunds i'd hoped it would be a few clicks online.

Seems unlikely that no-one else would want it, but I guess if you don't want the hassle of dealing with people, I can understand!

I think you have to retain it , but I would personally do so and then list it on eBay for a couple of hundred as you never know.

I left a plate on for almost a year and someone came along and paid full whack for it out of the blue

You can only do that by putting the private plate on retention.

However once you have a retention certificate you can surrender the rights to the plate and get the retention fee back.
