Expensive car supplement road tax trap

This applies until the car is 6 years old, but when you buy a new car, you pay road tax from the beginning of the month
So, do you get stung for an extra year because you have to renew the tax the month before the car turns 6 years old?
If so, I assume buying road tax, then cancelling the month after the car turns 6 years old, then buying another year would avoid this?
