Like shades they glide, these denizens of grey,
Uncaring of the storm that rages by.
What careless hearts, what reckless souls are these,
That through the blinding rain would blindly roam?
Heedless of dangers that the dark may seize,
Unwitting of the fear they bear for some.

Yes, it’s a silly omit by manufacturers.
My VWs had a setting to turn on lights when the wipers were being used, but in a Toyota they don’t have it.
Must be one of the easiest things to program. Recent Toyotas allow over the air updates so it could be added easily.
If it’s dull the auto lights come on, but not for rain.
Many cars have illuminated dashboards with just a tiny icon for lights on, a lot of people likely don’t know what the icon means.

When I taught my wife to drive (in a 1974 mini), the rule I taught was if you are using your wipers, then you need the lights. There's no reason why software couldn't do the same function now. Wipers on for more than 20 seconds, lights on, and stay on until you manually turn them off. SimonKD said:

My 17 year old Merc does exactly this. If the wipers activate more than a few swipes? The lights come on. Ardennes92 said:

Would be an improvement but still wouldn't help when it's misty. Personally I think automatic headlights, especially combined with always-lit dashboards, are a terrible idea unless they work absolutely flawlessly because it's inevitable that people come to rely on them. 911Spanker said:
