Driverless cars change driving behaviour

On average drivers using Tesla's autopilot drive 5,000 miles per year more than other drivers. To examine behavioural changes bought about by driverless cars the University of California conducted a study. They gave chauffer driven cars to a number of people for various periods.

The use of public transport fell by 90%

Overall miles driven increased by 60%, by 120% for pensioners

Much of the increased mileage was with zero occupancy - go and collect my friend, drop this person off there etc.

Some cars were left driving round in circles to avoid parking charges

A family second vehicle was usually left idle
