Hi,

I'm a relatively new driver, so would really appreciate some help.

I accidentally bumped someone's car when parking in a tight space recently. It left a small scratch on my car and scuff on theirs. They weren't around to talk to and I panicked and didn't leave a note. I messed up and realised this a little while later, so I went back to leave a note but they had left. I still decided to do the right thing and report the incident to the police using their online form, so that the other driver could track me down if needed.

This was a few weeks ago and I haven't heard anything. But someone told me that I should have told my insurance company, even though I wasn't going to make a claim. A quick Google search suggests this is the correct advice, but is likely to bump up my premiums. As a new driver, they are already very high!

I am having my car fixed privately. If the other driver does make contact by getting my details through the police, I will offer to pay for their damage privately too, as it is likely to be cheaper than going through my insurance.

The question is, shall I contact my insurance company and tell them? Or simply hope that this is the end of it? The police have my registration number linked to the incident, so I fear that they may inform the insurance company and I will then be in trouble for not telling them myself.

First time I've had a do anything like this, so any advice would be helpful.

If you've told the Police, you should tell your insurer. If you do have another accident and they get involved, they might pick it up and could cancel your cover. A no-claim marker on your policy shouldn't add a massive amount.

Why would they cancel his policy?

If you ever ask the question should I tell my insurer, the answer is always yes, they are likely to find out, and it will hurt if you didnt tell them.
