Selling Private Number Plate, Privately Help

I've sold a private number plate I have on retention privately but I am unsure how to get it into the guys name.


Speaking to the DVLA they said once on retention and I have the document back, I need to fill out the change of name form to which they then send it in their name to my address and then complete the change of address form which completes it to his full details.


Is there no easier way of doing it than taking possibly 6 weeks (2 weeks each time a document is sent to the DVLA)??


I mean can I not just assign it to his car with his details or something?

If the registration is going to be assigned to his vehicle straightaway, easy peasy. You just need the relevant details thereof.

I read that as its still my plate but in his name I am probably wrong mind you.

I read that as its still my plate but in his name I am probably wrong mind you.

once it is on a car - the person with the V5 for that car (DVLA will send him a new one with the new plate) controls / 'owns' the number plate...
(obviously, technically DVLA still 'owns' the plate...)
so if he wants it on a car - just assign it to that car...

In case anyone wanted to know. Exactly as advised that link I needed the buyers v5 for the car it went on for the reg, v5 document number and then the post code. I used my retention certificate number and 5 minutes later it was on his car he will get a new v5 job jobbed
