Mechanic stole my car???

Why not go to his house / place of work and collect it rather than fannying around texting and calling?
Also, not sure having insurance would actually help in this case as you willingly gave them the keys to repair your car, if anything you’d need to claim off his insurance. Happy to be corrected on this though.

Me and my partner have used a mobile mechanic that is my dad’s friend for around 3 years. I initially paid him £350 to do my brake pads, brake discs and callipers. A week later he phoned and said my ABS pump had gone so paid him £140 for that. I had another problem with my gas temp sensor so he tried sorting that which cost around £150 and took a bit of time. In the mean time, I cancelled my car insurance as I’d baught a new car and he has trade plates. So kept my car on his drive/garage until he fixed it. About 5 weeks ago, I have been wanting to pick up m my car to sell it. He said it was all fixed but has made excuses about not giving it back. He said his friend was buying it from him for me, then phoned and said another problem I said absolutely not. Then said his friend was coming again following weekend and he’d phone me to let me know the sale. I was a bit off put by this, but never had a problem with him in the past. My brother in law phoned him and said that he needed the car as he was concerned that he had had the car for 14 weeks and thinks I just needed it back. I agree it’s all seeming a bit off and I keep getting excuses that there is bereavement etc and I can’t get the car yet. I haven’t seen the car physically in 6 of them weeks. When my brother in law phoned the mechanich phoned me straight after and told me the brakes had warped and he was going to fix them and give the car back 24/05/24. So I said ok great I’ll see him Friday. Now his phone is off, I’ve contacted him on Facebook, texts, WhatsApp, phone and it’s like he has ghosted me! I do not want to contact the police yet as I’m hoping it’s just that he has broke his phone or something.
Yesterday I received a fine for a clean air notice on 4/5 which was him. You can clearly see the trade plates in the car. Im getting letters from tax and police telling me to SORN the car. But how can I SORN the car if it’s not on my drive, surely that’s my responsibility?!

I highly doubt any teenagers at school sign up to car forums to post tall stories. Unless you mean it’s one of the teachers, in which case maybe!
If it’s a fabrication, it’s more likely a bored adult.
Does he work from his home address or have garage premises somewhere else? Definitely go to where the car should be and see if it's there. If so take it. If not tell him or whichever family member that's there that you're reporting it stolen to the police. Interested to hear the outcome of this.

Almost sounds as though he has leant it to his friend for a while expecting you not to want it for a while and now you do want it back he’s stalling until his friend has finished with it. I bet the mileage has gone up dramatically since you dropped it off (which of course it shouldn’t have). Have you put the reg into the DVLA reg checker as it will tell you if the V5c has changed (i.e. ownership) any time recently.If he’s using your car with his own trade plates, how are you getting sent fines etc? He’d be getting them as those plates are (presumably) in his name.
Either way, if this is a legit story, stop being such a wet and tell him that he has 3 days to return your property or you’ll report it stolen.
