Cheapest way to get a home EV charger

Hi guys,

Got a PHEV due soon and looking into the cheapest and best way for a decent home charger. Is there any offers on or good ways that you guys know about?

I checked through octopus and they are quoting £1.1k installed. Does that seem par for the course?

For a PHEV you’d probably save more cash just using a plug-in ‘granny’ charger.

Around a grand is about the going rate.

Do you mean just the 3 pin plug mate?

Was considering this given I think the battery is around 12kwh so should charge overnight.

How near is your meter to the driveway and do you have reasonably modern electrics?

These are the sort of things that can push up costs from standard quotes.

Yeah meter is through one external wall right next to the driveway. So probably less than 3m of cabling to the meter

For 12 kw there’s zero point spending hundreds on a fancy charger. 13 amp plug granny charger will do 2kw per hour for free. Well, not free but you get the point.
We have a Honda E, before that a Soul and Leaf, all around 30kw battery and have used a 2 kw granny charger since 2015. I fitted a 32 amp commando socket when we had a Tesla and hardly used it.
A good quality MK metalclad socket in the garage or an equivalent outdoor socket plus a check over of the terminals inside your consumer unit for tightness will be all you need.

You could, for practicality’s sake, put a plug in near the car. Perhaps with a waterproof socket. For the PHEV I’d save the expense, but if long term you plan on going full EV then might as well put the plumbing in for a charger while you’re at it.
