Taxing a Car on Temporary Insurance

I need to get my car to the garage at 0945 on Monday 8 July for 2 days. It is SORN at present, and the insurance doesn't start until 26 July.

I need to get some temporary cover and tax it, am I right in saying I need 24 hours cover in advance of taxing it so MID is updated and as this will be the weekend, does MID get updated at the weekend?

As far as I'm aware, it will only prevent you from taxing it in the absence of an MOT

Probably cheaper to trailer it or get the garage to collect it on trade plates. How far away is the garage?

Does it have an MOT or is that why you are taking it to the garage? You can drive to a garage without tax for a pre-booked MOT test.

Thanks it has a full mot, it is my son's car and he gets his one year ncb on the 26th and he is swapping his car then. I will have a go at taxing it on the 1st, I suspect it will work from the previous comment. It is only going 5 miles but I am bound to get caught on a camera and it is SORN.

If the garage does MOTs and it only has a little while left then you may as well just book the MOT. Be aware if you remove the SORN they can automatically fine you for no insurance, so you would have to keep up the cover until your son's insurance kicks in.

Thanks Colin that is a very good point. I will just move the appointment until after the 26th I think that is going to be easiest.

VW main dealer, they want the just out of warranty Golf for 2 days to do 2 recalls, so could get caught on the way home. My son wanted it doing before he starts driving it on the 26 July but he is going to have to be patient.

Thanks, I remember the days when you had to go to the Post Office with all your documents :-) If you do a google search most of the sites say you have to have insurance but I am pretty certain not now.

Just a little worried about having no insurance after the temporary insurance between 11 and 26 July. I don't want to SORN it again and pay the tax twice in July.

Everything I read on this says you do need insurance in place, you might not need to show the cert anymore as the check is electronic.
