Tracking down a private registration

In a moment of weakness 5 years ago I left a personalised registration on a leased car that I returned to VWFS.

I was too excited with my new car that I couldn’t be bothered with the hassle of transferring the plate.

However with the passage of time I’ve come to regret my decision and am keen to buy the plate back.

My issue is that that the plate is returning no results with the DVLA - anyone got any ideas how I could track it down?

It’s pretty much impossible.

Can’t you apply to dvla to release it again ?

Last time I checked it was on a car, when I checked recently it showed no results. Will give the DVLA a call.

It will be on a retention certificate with someone I expect then.

Just tried the help section of the DVLA website - they can’t re-release a plate that has previously been sold.

But you can enquire about similar unreleased plates so I’ve just done that incase I can get something similar.

My frustration is that it was a 5 digit and there are only 6 digit similar ones available - seems daft to buy a longer plate than I had!

Could be worth trawling the many and various online plate dealers in case someone made an enquiry about selling it.
