Hi guys,

I recently bought a new car the month before my insurance renewal. Checked quotes online and came back around £400-500. Got the car and called my insurer and it added around £40 extra to cover the 40 days between getting the car and my renewal.

Checked comparison sites 1 week after getting the car and the quotes have gone from £400 to £1600. Checked direct sources, nothing has changed in terms of driving record or anything and really can’t understand why the quotes have increased by 400% in a week.

Anyone have any idea what’s going on?

What is the new car ?
What is it replacing ?
What is your current Insurer asking for the next 12 months cover ?

So replacing a M240 with an Audi Q4.

M240 is still insured as I’m keeping it till the policy renews and the lease ends. So the additional £40 was for adding the Q4 for the 40 days or so till the policy is due for renewal.

Quotes on the Q4 were £400 1 week ago and today are £1600.

Still haven’t got the renewal invitation from my current insurer but expect this in the next few weeks.

The closer you get to the inception of the new policy, the more expensive a quote will be. The sweet spot or around four weeks out I’m led to believe.

Yeah that’s why I started looking now so I have a few quotes up my sleeve in case the renewal is more expensive.

I am 40 days away from renewal but all quotes across the market have increased by about 400% compared with 7 days ago

I just ran a quote for the car I'm thinking of getting soon, of which is a lower insurance group than my current car... Confused have put a £300 increase on what I'm currently paying, and Aviva refused to quote me at all. Getting a bit worried now!

Are these new cars electric by any chance?

I think I preferred the original Tubeway Army lyrics.

Will be interesting to see what the current Insurer then quotes for the full 12 months but should be circa £500 given what they have quoted pro rata.
Absolutely no idea why prices should have increased in a week from others - I would have thought the Q4 is hardly a high risk model where stats have altered that much in a week !

Was the initial 40 days done as a temp car added to your existing cars policy? In that respect it may have benefitted from your NCD on your BMW.

What NCD are you able to use for the Audi? If you still have the BMW policy in force you can't use that NCD can you (some insurers may match it, but not all).

That would be a reason for a high quote, but not why the quote has quadrupled in a week

Are you sure all the details are the same? Did you use your log-in on a comparison site to reload the details you used before or could you have changed something fundamental in error? It's easily done.

My wife's Enyaq is cheaper than my ancient XC60, for me.

Will keep everyone posted on when the renewal arrives in the next week or so.

Starting to question if the insurers are acting a bit under hand and if they see a car is not insured (when it was sitting on the forecourt) that they price competitively and then when it has been insured they let the competition go out the window and price high

NCD is on the BMW still so technically the Audi has zero no claims and on the comparison sites I’ve put down 8 years NCD and it’s came back with the crazy numbers. Makes it even more confusing

I had something similar happen, got a quote for £1700 with a £500 voluntary excess, removed the excess completely, price went up to £1950, put a £100 excess, price went up to £2100, put it back to the original £500 excess price now £2400! All in 10 mins and I had no option but to take it. Upset, but I'd been getting quotes back at around the £4500 mark, so even £2400 was 'good'. frown

If you don’t log out in between quotes (and clear cookies), the algorithm assesses you as desperate !
(Note you say ‘removed the excess completely’, that will be the voluntary excess, there will be a standard excess that remains IME.
