You need to hear the Charger's Fratzonic exhaust

Dodge has finished its patent-pending EV exhaust - and it doesn't sound half bad

Dodge was never likely to follow convention when it came to an EV transition. Back when the electric Charger was previewed as a concept, it came with a soundtrack. And nobody liked it much. Now, however, with the new Charger Daytona about to begin production, Dodge has revealed just how the Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust - don’t call it Fartzonic, whatever you do - will sound for customers. It has ‘fine tuned the system’s performance notes before locking in the one-of-a-kind personality’. And y’know, it’s alright. 

Sure, it won’t be mistaken for a Hemi V8, but it’s interesting and it’s different - immediately it means that the Charger will have a character, and its owners something to talk about. Whether that means an Ioniq 5 N attribute to discuss positively or an Abarth 500e one isn’t yet clear, but let’s see. Dodge has seemingly invested plenty into the Fratzonic, with a patent-pending around its design. A Sport mode will be the everyday setting, with more volume reserved for Drift, Donut and Track. Stealth won’t make any noise at all. 

How it works is probably best explained by Dodge. Throttle position and speed are taken into account, so hopefully it won’t buzz along like an Abarth. Specifically, the Fratzonic system uses a pair of extreme bandwidth transducers that work in conjunction with two more ‘Fratzonic Chamber-loaded passive radiators’, which are powered by a 600-watt amp. Dodge says that the sounds created will provide feedback for the driver in high-speed situations. Expect sound-offs with Hellcats as soon as the first cars are built.

I think that sounds great. I will reserve my full judgment for when I hear it in the flesh as I am hearing it via a speaker on an iPad so it may sound synthetic in person.

how about a car that will just drive nicely once ESP/TC is off instead of a magic button that will slide you around without any sense or skill involved?

I understand fake engine noise piped into the car, which saves making engine noises with your voice. I think the only reason anyone would wan't this is if they REALLY can't stop themselves being an anti-social bellend and want everyone else to hear it too.

Not too shabby at all.

How long before there somebody creates a whole host of downloadable engine sounds that replicate whatever one's favourite engines are.

Not sure that the neighbours will be happy though.

I've heard worse (and the internal sound cli really made me smile - as a novelty) but will it also give the same sort of sound as if you're rowing through the gears?

They all do already, and they have to, by law.
The thing is, none of the petrolheads like the futuristic electrical noises but now you'd prefer they didn't mimic the sound of an ICE.

Is this still not fake? Better to work on how best to bring about the sound emitted from the EV motor, though I suspect it'd still be polishing the turd. Long live the ICE.

Not for me, thanks. It's like muscle implants. Just knowing it's fake, ruins it for me.
