OEM Windscreens

Just tried to get OEM glass for my BMW and the insurer Ageas refused.

Are any others out there refusing or allowing lately?

I will change insurers but why OEM BMW glass? We Lamishield as fitted to my car by Autogless has cracked every time its been hit by a stone. The BM one was more robust.

The Mrs XK had this same problem - they came out and fitted a cheap Chinese-branded screen first (which didn't fit well), as they'd damaged some trim they had to come back out, and we asked for the OEM-spec Pilkington glass, no quibble.

My understanding of AGEAS is that the claim is unlimited if their nominated repairer is used. If not, the claim is capped at £1k of which you pay the first £100.00; they pay 900. Anything above that come out of your pocket.

Are you sure it's the insurer you're talking to? It might their chosen windscreen company (National Windscreens, I think).

As part of my insurance renewal I queried my windscreen cover in great detail. A new OEM screen is £2700 in Japan (there is no non OEM screen available) and it costs a similar amount to crate it and ship from Japan. So a screen is damn near £6k. My premium seems quite reasonable considering

Thanks Glassman,

Autoglass asked them and they didn’t respond so I called my broker and they contacted them.
There is only 2 weeks left on the policy now so maybe that was something to do with the decision.
I will write to Ageas for an official response.
